EAST LANSING — Michigan State University football fans will pass through an extra level of security beginning this weekend following the installation of walk-through metal detectors at Spartan Stadium.

The systems will be in place for the Sept. 9 game against Richmond, according to a release from the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety.

"We are committed to continuing to enhance our safety and security portfolio at Michigan State University,” said MSU vice president and chief safety officer Marlon Lynch in the release. “This new addition to Spartan Stadium will continue to make sure the venue remains safe for all to enjoy.”

The detectors will allow fans to walk through unimpeded. People will need to remove items from their pockets if metal is detected. Subsequent checks would be conducted with a security wand, the release said.

Officials encouraged fans to arrive early at Spartan Stadium to allow quicker entry.

The walk-through system is already in place at the Breslin Student Events Center, officials said.

Walk-through metal detectors also will be installed at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, Munn Ice Arena and the MSU Tennis Center. The release did not detail a timeline for those installations.
