Spartanburg County growth: 3 companies plan to invest $20 million, create nearly 200 jobs

Three companies planning to invest a total of $20.3 million and create 178 jobs have announced plans to locate operations in Spartanburg County, according to Gov. Henry McMaster.

"Boysen USA, VPET USA and Winar Connection are all leaders in their areas of manufacturing and each will make significant contributions in improving Spartanburg County's quality of life," said Spartanburg County Councilman David Britt, who chairs the county's economic development committee.

This year to date, Spartanburg County has seen total planned investments of $1.588 billion, with 1,724 new jobs, Britt said.

"We still have three months to go in 2022 and they look very promising," he said. "The golden goose is business and industry and these are three golden eggs."

Boysen USA expanding SC footprint

Boysen USA has expanded its South Carolina presence from a manufacturing plant in Gaffney to the opening of a new location at 404 Centura Court, near the intersection of Interstate 85 and Business 85 and off North Blackstock Road in Spartanburg County.

According to McMaster's press release, Boysen cited increased demand for its products as the reason for its expansion into Spartanburg County.

A specialist in automotive exhaust technology, Boysen plans to invest $4.5 million and create 88 new jobs at the Spartanburg location. Worldwide, Boysen has about 5,300 employees at 25 sites, according to its website.

Boysen develops and manufactures exhaust manifolds, catalytic converters, particulate traps and complete exhaust systems.

Its customers include German carmakers BMW, Audi, Daimler, Porsche and VW, as well as British carmakers Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Among local Boysen jobs advertised are quality technician, maintenance technician and machine operator. Benefits include paid health and dental insurance and a matching 401k plan. Pay for machine operators is $17-$19 per hour, depending on the shift.

Spartanburg County Council has backed tax breaks of $100,000 in special source credits over three years for Boysen's investment.

A subsidiary of the German-based Boysen Group, its first South Carolina location opened in Gaffney in 2004. BMW was its first customer. Today, that location has 310 employees, according to its website.

Winar Connection plans to create 50 jobs

Winar Connection Inc., a manufacturer of custom cable products, announced plans to invest $5 million and create 50 jobs at 2525 Chesnee Highway in Spartanburg.

Operations are expected to start in November. No jobs for the Spartanburg location had been advertised yet as of Thursday.

Founded in 1982 in Richfield, Ohio, Winar makes power, ground and battery cables and custom cable assemblies for customers in the battery charging, electrical power grid, load grid and data center industries.

VPET USA coming to Greer

VPET USA, a manufacturer of plastic food, beverage and pharmaceutical bottles and containers, plans to invest $10.8 million and create 40 new jobs at 861 Victor Hill Road in Greer.

Founded in 2001, the company is based in Fontana, California, and plans to open the Greer facility this month.The company makes wide-mouth polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and jars.

VPET's Greer site will serve as a blow molding and injection molding facility to supply customers in the Southeast.

Jobs advertised include packer, lead production, blow molding technician and operations leader. Benefits include a $1,300 signing bonus for new hires, paid health, dental and vision insurance and a matching 401k plan. Pay for a blow molding technician starts at $60,000 a year.

The South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development awarded a $150,000 grant to Spartanburg County to assist with the cost of building improvements.

"These three companies prove that all you have to do is fit our mission and vision in offering great futures for your associates and becoming a part of Spartanburg's corporate family," Britt said. "This resonates with these companies and we have rolled out the welcome mat to them."
