Spartanburg three-star quarterback Raheim Jeter commits to East Carolina football

After re-opening his recruiting earlier this season, three-star prospect and Spartanburg High School quarterback Raheim Jeter has announced his commitment to play at East Carolina.

Throughout his high school career Jeter accumulated a handful of offers from various Power Five schools, including Georgia, Virginia Tech and his first commitment, West Virginia. This time, Jeter's decision came down to Rutgers and his ultimate choice, ECU.

Last season, Jeter led the Vikings to a region championship and an appearance in the Class AAAAA Upper State championship game while passing for 2,979 yards with 27 touchdowns. So far this season he's continued to be excellent, throwing for 1,759 yards with 17 total touchdowns and three interceptions.

The 6-foot-3 220-pound Jeter is ranked by the 247Sports Composite as the 16th-best prospect in South Carolina and the 48th ranked QB prospect in the nation.

Beyond his numbers or physical frame, his coach at Spartanburg, Mark Hodge, raves about his abilities above the shoulders.

"He's highly intelligent on field, very coachable, he owns all mistakes, and in our offense, we actually empower him to change any play," Hodge said. "So, he's basically got offensive coordinator privileges as a high school football player.

"Then throw in his toughness, it just makes him an unbelievable asset at quarterback ... he's going to be probably well ahead of most other college freshmen."

Jeter had to show that toughness and maturity off the field as well after a difficult moment earlier this year when he was shot in the leg in a road-rage incident. Despite having surgery, Jeter only missed a couple of days of school, and was able to recover in time for summer practices without missing a snap this season.

According to Jeter, the whole experience allowed him to gain a new perspective on life, telling the Herald-Journal journal in August, "I'm just glad to be here. ... It showed me how short life is and how life can be gone just like that. So I thank God everyday that I'm still here and I'm able to do what I love on the football field."

Whether it be his physical gifts, the intellectual abilities his coach raves about or the mental toughness he showed when going through a life-altering moment, Pirate fans should be excited about landing the Spartanburg QB.

But before he heads east to Greenville, North Carolina, he has a few more games with the Vikings, including a Week 10 matchup with cross-county rival Dorman that will determine playoff seeding.
