Spartanburg Water: Lake Bowen Park to remain open during shoreline restoration project

Lake Bowen Park will remain open during a shoreline restoration project scheduled to begin the week of June 5, according to Spartanburg Water.

The work to stabilize the shoreline at the park is part of a grant awarded by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, according to Spartanburg Water spokeswoman Jennifer Candler.

Lake Bowen Park will remain open during a shoreline restoration project through August that will begin this week.

The grant is intended to help reduce pollutants in a watershed to help improve water quality, she said.

Spartanburg Water manages Lake Bowen, a reservoir used as a drinking water supply for a population of nearly 200,000 in Spartanburg County and parts of Greenville, Union and Cherokee counties.

The Spartanburg Commission of Public Works recently awarded a $280,910 contract for Phase 1 of the project to Roebuck Wholesale Nursery & Landscaping.

Using plant species, the project will address shoreline erosion and impervious surface runoff containing pollutants. The plants serve as a natural filter and barrier to keep excess nutrients in the soil from entering the reservoir, according to Candler.

The park will remain open throughout the project, which will last through August. Some parking spaces in the peninsula loop will be blocked off but will reopen on weekends.

The park also encompasses Anchor Park, a playground area that will also remain open during the work.
