Spartans get by Northeast

Feb. 14—Southwestern men shot nearly 50% from the field in a 68-55 win Saturday over visiting Northeast Community College.

Southwestern had four players finish in double-digit scoring. Leading the way for the Spartans was Patrick Worrell with 13. He finished with 4-9 shooting from the field including 2-6 from the 3-point line. He made all three of his free throws.

Justin Bussey and Drake Davison were right behind with 12. Bussey was 3-5 shooting with one 3-point shot and made all five of his free throws. Off the bench, Davison was 6-8 shooting. Corbin Dozier finished with nine.

Devin Tomlinson was top rebounder for Southwestern with eight.

The Spartans had a 35-24 halftime advantage. Northeast finished 19-49 shooting and 12-17 free throws.

Southwestern lost 76-60 Feb. 4 at Iowa Western. Joel Vilanueva led the Spartans with 21 points. He was 7-13 shooting and 5-6 at the free throw line. Two players scored 10; Worrell and Brance Baker. Worrell was 3-8 shooting and added a free throw. He made three 3-point shots and had the most Spartan rebounds with seven. Baker was 4-11 shooting including a couple of 3-point shots.

As a team, Southwestern finished 21-52 including 10-30 from the 3-point line. The Spartans made 8-11 free throws. Southwestern trailed 37-27 at half. Iowa Western finished 23-43 shooting.

Southwestern (9-16) was to play Southeast Feb. 8, but that game was cancelled because of limited number of available players. Southwestern plays 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids.
