Spaulding captures team title at the 2022 Michael J. Baker Wrestling Classic at Essex

·2 min read

ESSEX - The 2022 Michael J. Baker classic wasn't fully loaded schedule like the 2019 meet that boasted 26 teams.

But wrestling was back at Essex High School: it spanned two days, involved 21 schools and 14 champions were crowned in the longstanding meet.

The classic, which hosted schools from both New York and New Hampshire this year, saw Spaulding and the Hornets claiming the top two spots with scores of 195 and 174, respectively. Plymouth (N.H.) rounded out the top three (see below for full results).

Spaulding was paced with four individual winners in Coy Lyford (106 pounds), Caleb Huntngton (113), Nick Pierce (126) and Colton Perkins (285).

Anthony Matas (132), Oliver Orvis (182) and Kam Cyr (195) led Essex with wins in their weight class.

Jack Arpey also took home first-place hardware in the 160-pound class for Mount Mansfield.

"We always thought that the season was gonna happen," Essex coach Ira Isham said. "We didn't know what it would look like. But it definitely feels great for everyone to be here this weekend.

"We didn't really know till Friday who was actually going be here for teams. And we are missing a few teams that are normally here due to travel restrictions and things of that nature, so it felt good to put on a two-day event. But it wasn't normal."

Dylan Schell of Queensbury (N.Y.), the 170-pound winner, was named the meet's outstanding wrestler.
