Springfield Police are investigating a homicide in the northeast area of the city.

Officers responded to 24th Street and Allison Court shortly after 5:30 a.m. Saturday to a report of a 34-year-old male who had been shot in the upper body, said SPD Commander Sara Pickford.

The victim, identified Sunday afternoon as Emmanuel Boston of Springfield, was discovered in the roadway.

Boston was transported by ambulance to HSHS St. John’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead by hospital personnel at 6:29 a.m., according to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon.

Pickford said a 911 call was placed and the incident showed up as an alert on ShotSpotter.

A couple of potential suspects have been identified and linked to the victim, Pickford said. Police at this time don't have an exact motive.

Pickford could not immediately confirm how many times Boston was shot.

Pickford said Boston was not shot in a residence, but it was unclear if he was shot in a roadway.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, Allmon said.

Anyone with information concerning this shooting is asked to call the SPD at 217-788-8311 and/or Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427.
