Speak out against 15-day abortion ban in New Hampshire

Jan. 3 − To the Editor:

I write in strong opposition to House Bill 1248-FN (a legislative proposal in New Hampshire imposing a ban on abortion at 15 days). I have gone back and forth with co-sponsors of the bill.  It is clear to me that their oversimplification of the intricate landscape of reproductive health care laws will do nothing but harm Granite Staters. We have already seen the detrimental effect that trigger laws and near total abortion bans in other states have had on the lives of women and people who can get pregnant. We have also seen the reluctance of maternity care providers to work in states where they might face legal challenges to their practice.

Since the fall of Roe, New Hampshire legislators have been slowly chipping away at our bodily autonomy. In 2021, a 24-week ban was implemented without voter consent. Now, we are faced with HB-1248-FN, a near total abortion ban considering most people are unaware of their pregnancies at such an early stage. Both pieces of legislation were introduced without direct voter input, and they infringe on decisions that should remain between Granite Staters and their health care providers.

I urge you to contact your NH state representative today and ask them to OPPOSE HB 1248. If legislators are interested in helping reduce the rates of unintended pregnancies, they should instead advocate for policies that prioritize access to health care, affordable contraception, comprehensive sex education, and empower people to make informed decisions about their bodies.

Gregg and Sununu are right: Vote Nikki Haley

Jan. 4 − To the Editor:

To concerned citizens who care about our democracy.

For those of you who have not read former Senator and Governor Judd Gregg’ s column  in the Jan . 3 edition of the Herald Opinion page I would urge you to do so.

Sen. Gregg spares no details in reminding the reader of the serious problems that confront us, the results of a lack of leadership from the current administration. How often have we all heard the following : "The truth hurts.” Some hurtful examples are deficits courtesy of both Biden and Trump; a Southern border that is the very definition of the term “ leaking like a sieve “ despite a wall and miles of barbed wire ; a federal government run by  autocratic and bureaucratic individuals who have no accountability to the voter. All of the latter and numerous others demand a change to effective, strong leadership..

Consider the following events , which are just a few of the many that have taken place over the last few months .

Former Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Mathews has joined White House Aid Cassidy Hutchinson and White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah Griffin in exposing the threats to American Democracy .All three have two things in common. First, they were part of the Trump White House. Second, They have endured death threats and require protection. In this regard, they join Liz Cheney for  speaking out against tyranny and also requiring protection. Colorado Supreme Court judges also now need protection for voting to remove Trump from the ballot for inciting insurrection. ( Fourteenth amendment to the  Constitution . )

There is critical need for strong effective leadership in the Oval Office. Further, a need for moral character and a belief in the rule of law as well as our Constitution. The individual who reflects those values is Nikki Haley who has not only  been endorsed by Senator Gregg but also by Gov. Chris Sununu. As the beginning of  Sen. Gregg’s column boldly states : “  Nikki Haley is the leader America needs now “ .

Not watching The Exorcist on Christmas Eve

Dec. 24 − To the Editor:

I was perusing the Sunday Christmas Eve edition of Foster's when I came across an article entitled, "One of these movies is what you should watch tonight." Listed was 'The Exorcist: Believer.' Described as two girls who go missing in the forest for three days and return with something demonic in them.

So the recommendation was to celebrate the eve of the birth of Jesus Christ by watching a movie on demonic possession. Seriously? Not on your life.

Write in Biden on Jan. 23

Jan. 7 − To the Editor:

The New Hampshire First-in-the-Nation presidential primary is coming up on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, Joe Biden’s name will not be on the Democratic ballot. Fortunately, we still have an opportunity to re-elect the best president we have had in years. All we need to do is choose a Democratic ballot, write in “Joe Biden” on the write-in line, and fill in the oval. A huge NH victory for Joe Biden by write-in votes alone will have an enormous influence on the voters in all the other states. In fact, the whole world will be watching our FITN primary on January 23. This is our chance to show the world our strong faith in Joe.

Just think what Joe Biden has accomplished in his first term. First, he got us through the worst of the pandemic with a minimum of deaths. The economy is doing better. Inflation is down. He passed the Inflation Reduction Act that, among other things, cut the cost of insulin from $600 per month to $35 per month. He passed the Infrastructure law that has provided funds to states to improve roads, bridges and internet access and has created jobs. He does not back down against authoritarians and terrorist groups.

Joe Biden has proven that the Democratic Party is still the party of the working class. A majority of votes for Biden will show that democracy is alive and well in New Hampshire and that Joe Biden is the man to finish the job. Please write in Joe Biden on January 23!

I'm voting for Haley in primary and Biden on Nov. 5

Jan. 7 − To the Editor:

I was a Republican until 2015.  I am now registered as undeclared (independent) and one of many former Republicans whose objective in 2024 is to keep former President Trump from becoming president again. If he loses the primary, we will all exhale. He won’t go away but he won’t be able to shut down the FBI and Department of Justice and give Ukraine to Putin.

I like Chris Christie’s candor regarding the former president. I like that he was the only Republican candidate willing to say he would not support the former president should he become the Republican candidate. However, as I write this, it seems that Nikki Haley has the best odds of beating the former president in the primary.

In keeping with my objective (not Trump),  on January 23, 2024 my Republican primary ballot will be cast for Nikki Haley. On November 5, 2024, assured that he will not shut down the FBI or Department of Justice, or give Ukraine to Putin, I will vote for President Joe Biden.
