Special guests share books, love of reading at area schools

Schools around Ventura County welcomed special guest readers Friday as part of the seventh annual Take 5 and Read to Kids! literacy campaign.

The campaign was organized by First 5 Ventura County, which is funded by the state's tobacco tax. Children listened as local politicians and civic and business leaders read from popular books like "Dragons love Tacos" and "Good Night, Mr. Panda."

"Studies have proven that when you talk, read and sing to children from birth on, you promote and support early language and literacy development," First 5 said in a news release.

The reading continues this week at libraries across the region.
