No matter how popular you are, finding a date to prom date can be stressful. But just imagine how difficult it is for students with special needs.

“I’ve gotten used to the looks and the stares. It’s hard when you see a lot of other kids doing things that your child doesn’t get to do,” says Angi McLemore in an interview with WTHR-TV.

Her 17-year-old daughter Destiny recently “promposed” to grade 12 student Grant Kelley over Facebook and was surprised when he responded yes.

“He’s a pretty popular kid,” she said.

“He had some classmates ask him, ‘Are you really going to go with her?’ And his response was… His response was 'Absolutely.’ He said, 'I can’t wait to have fun with her.’”

As planned, Kelley showed up at McLemore’s house on prom night in a dress shirt, bowtie and dress pants ready to celebrate. For her part, Destiny wore a glittery pink dress topped with a tiara.

While the two attended the special prom, a prom typically reserved for students with special needs, Kelley was honoured to be included.

“Destiny is such a great gal. She is fun and I knew we would have a great time together,” Kelley said. “It made me feel special because she asked me.”
