Speed limit will soon increase on this busy road in Avon

AVON, Ohio (WJW) – Changes are coming to a busy road on the west side. The speed limit will increase on Detroit Road in Avon at the end of the month.

“Anyone who has driven through Avon knows it gets backed up,” said Mayor Bryan Jensen.

Jensen said city council set out to decrease the speed limit on the six-mile stretch from Westlake to Sheffield.

“You have to go through ODOT because it’s Route 254,” said Jensen.

So, the city submitted their request to the Ohio Department of Transportation, but ODOT disagreed and said Avon should increase it.

“I think in some ways it will help with consistency. You will have toward Westlake, it will be 40 mph. Middle of town, it will be 35 mph. End of town toward Sheffield, it will be 45 mph. Before we had so many different posts,” said Jensen.

Eleven different posted speed limit signs, to be exact. ODOT said it should be three.

“I’m a little bit disappointed. What their study showed is to keep traffic moving and sometimes to keep people safe, those speed limits need to increase,” said Jensen.

The mayor says the new speed limit signs have been ordered and are expected to go up in a couple weeks. That is when the changes will officially go into effect.

Jensen said drivers can expect to see more police officers along that stretch, enforcing the posted limits.
