Speeding SUV crashes into tree on South Side, causes significant damage

CHICAGO — A speeding SUV lost control Saturday and crashed into an apartment building and a large tree, which then fell onto a parked vehicle, on the city’s South Side.

According to police, the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. when a 36-year-old man was speeding in the 1300 block of East 73rd Street in a silver SUV and struck a tree. Police say the driver refused medical attention and two male passengers were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police did not provide more details about the crash.

But there was certainly a big mess left behind Saturday, resident Daysha Brown saying the driver crashed into her apartment building, causing damage inside and outside, in addition to the downed tree and the heavily damaged SUV.

“This is going to be a nice job for the insurance company,” Brown told WGN News.

“… People tend to speed down 73rd Street a lot, so there was a vehicle that blew the stop sign and took out the tree here and ran into my building, came down this sidewalk and ended right there across the street.”
