Spellbound: Magick practitioner promotes spiritual growth

October is a busy season for Magick In The Work, but for shop owner Connie Flanigan, a witch’s work is never done.

The 57-year-old owns and operates the specialty store located at 1622 N. Monroe St.

“The metaphysical store is about spiritual growth. We offer all kinds of services from guidance in a spiritual path to energy healing like Reiki,” Flanigan said. “We also offer rain drop therapy which helps with anxiety.”

As a young girl, Flanigan knew she had special abilities, but it wasn’t until she became an adult that she realized she’s a witch.

“I am a magick practitioner that specializes in helping you improve your spiritual growth and awareness, self-healing, and guidance as you move through your journey,” Flanigan said. “We offer books and classes to help you with your spiritual growth as you decide what is best for you.”

Flanigan started doing readings for family and friends but said she always knew she was born with a special gift.

“When I was young, I would have visions, but it was something we didn’t talk about,” she said. “I believe we’re all born with gifts, and we need to learn to trust it.”

According to Flanigan, viewing matters with an open mind, being one with nature and healing others are some requirements for being a witch.

After a successful 30-year career as a nurse, her focus has been running her own business.

The idea to open the metaphysical shop came from an experience Flanigan had after she sustained an injury and experienced an energy healing.

“I was struggling to walk, and I had gone into a metaphysical store and the lady there asked if she could help me,” she said. “I wasn’t sure what she did, I just knew I felt better. I found out later it was Reiki. I knew then I had to start looking into Reiki and I started reading every book I could get my hands on about energy healing and energy workers.”

Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing and type of alternative medicine. Reiki practitioners place their hands on or above the body through which energy is transferred from the palms of the practitioner to encourage healing. Flanigan took classes to become a Reiki master and offers sessions at her shop. She also offers tea leaf readings and in-person and phone tarot readings.

“After sipping a cup of tea, the patterns of the leftover tea leaves create special symbols and shapes that give messages from spirit guides,” Flanigan said.

When it comes to tarot readings, many customers are seeking answers for love and finances.

Store manager Sam Draper of Newport, a witch-in-training, offers palm readings. Information about readings and upcoming classes can be found on the store’s website.

Opened in 2020, the corner shop offers a variety of crystals and herbs, self-care products, candles, jewelry, spell kits, and Ouija boards along with black salt protection and sage sticks.

“All the crystals have their own properties. It depends on what a person is going through that they will be drawn to a certain crystal. When someone comes in and says, ‘I know something is calling me, but I don’t know what it is,’ we tell them to let the crystal pick you,” she said.

“Crystals are used in a variety of ways. Sometimes its for guiding or grounding. Sometimes it’s to keep things away. The connection is usually a vibration exchange between the crystal’s Mother Earth and the person wearing the crystal or carrying the crystal.”

Flanigan encourages her patrons to look around the store to see what they are drawn to. However, not all items are for sale, like the spirited dolls on display.

“These are part of my personal collection,” she said. “You don’t choose them, they choose you.”
