ISP releases victims' names in Spencer County crash that left one dead, deputy injured

A wreck in Spencer County Thursday morning killed one driver and hospitalized the other, a Spencer County sheriff's deputy.

Indiana State Police named the two victims involved in the Thursday crash in a news release. Phillip Everett Brown, 61, of Indianapolis, died after his SUV collided head-on with the patrol cruiser of Spencer County Sheriff's deputy Ronald Wayne Harper.

Harper was transported to a Louisville hospital, but his injuries aren't expected to be life-threatening, police said.

The SUV was reportedly traveling east on Indiana 66 near Old Lamar Highway around 5 a.m. Thursday when it suddenly veered off the road, overcorrected and traveled into the path of the westbound deputy, according to the news release.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. Harper was taken to Owensboro Hospital and then flown to a hospital in Louisville.

ISP said neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
