Spencer Rattler transfer speculation: Arizona Wildcats football among best options for QB

When Spencer Rattler was benched as the Oklahoma football starting quarterback earlier this season, speculation immediately surrounded Arizona as a possible landing spot for the former Arizona high school standout.

That speculation returned after the QB entered the college football transfer portal on Monday.

Several college football writers linked Rattler, a Phoenix Pinnacle High product, to the Wildcats football team in the aftermath of his announcement.

One writer wrote that Arizona was among the best options for the quarterback.

Another wrote that he could give the Wildcats program a huge boost.

Barrett Sallee wrote: "Rattler is from Phoenix and his home-state Wildcats are nothing short of a disaster. They went 1-11 this season and the only player who threw more touchdowns than interceptions was wide receiver Jamarye Joiner, who completed just 4-of-10 passes for 89 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jedd Fisch could be on the hot seat in 2022 and it's not like he has any other hot quarterback prospects on the horizon. Rattler not only could revitalize a program in his own state, but could do it for a team that desperately needs a boost."

Chris Hummer wrote: "Arizona is Rattler’s home state and the Wildcats do need a quarterback in the worst way. But would Rattler want to join a rebuilding project? Probably not. But Arizona needs to be included here due to its proximity to his hometown."

Sporting News: Arizona among best possible landing spots for Spencer Rattler

Jacob Camenker wrote: "The Wildcats haven't had a winning season since 2017 during Rich Rodriguez's last season as the team's head coach. They have only had one 10-win season over the last 20 years, and they just posted a 1-11 record in Jedd Fisch's first year as head coach. Why would Rattler want to go to Arizona? Simple: an opportunity to turn a program around in his home state. Rattler is from Phoenix and played collegiately at Pinnacle High School. He threw for more than 11,000 yards during his college career and was named an Elite 11 prospect as a result of his strong performance. Perhaps a return home could spark him, and it's not like Arizona has a proven quarterback on the roster. Playing for Fisch is an intriguing proposition as well. He has coached for seven different NFL teams and was an offensive coordinator for two years with the Jaguars in 2013-14. That, plus Fisch's NFL connections, could appeal to Rattler as he looks to round back into form."
