Spencerport football eyes first Section V title: Top players, schedule and what to know

The Rangers continue their search for the school’s first Section V football championship and without doubt, they’ve been close in recent seasons.

Spencerport is 21-5 over the past three seasons but two of those seasons have ended in the semifinals and another, last fall, ended in the Class A2 championship. Quirky stat over those 26 games: Of Spencerport’s five losses, four have come against Canandaigua and one came against East.

Working in Spencerport’s favor this fall is experience. Running back Cam Mesh is a senior and he’ll have the bulk of his offensive line back to work with in Jeff McPherson, Jackson Burns and Alex Fitch. Julian Holley is a transfer from Greece Olympia who should also see plenty of time on the lines.

Senior Cam Mesh (22) is back to lead Spencerport as a running back and defensive back.

Senior Rylan McLeod may be ready to step in at QB after a broken leg forced him to miss the 2021 spring season and last fall and he’ll have plenty of experienced help running a Double Wings offense that thrives on misdirection and deception.

If the defense can tighten up a bit and not allow a little more than two TDs a game as the Rangers shift to Class A1 this fall, they can position themselves as contenders for a Section V title.

Marquee matchups for Spencerport

The table is set for the Rangers to have a successful regular season and provide some momentum for the postseason. The Week 5 Homecoming game against Hilton is interesting because of Hilton’s move from Class AA and the home game in Week 6 against Brighton will probably be Spencerport’s stiffest test of the regular season before closing with a pair of road games at Webster Thomas and Brockport.
