Spend spring at the Newport Art Museum

Spring is in the air and there's plenty happening on the Newport Art Museum. Take a look at what's planned.

Social Fabric Artist Talk: On Thursday, March 23, from 6-7:30 p.m., the Museum will host a live talk virtually on Vimeo with exhibiting artists Jim Arendt, Letitia Huckaby, Aubrey Longley-Cook, and Tamara Kostianovsky to discuss the themes present in their works and how their practices have evolved to include textiles. Senior Curator Francine Weiss and Social Fabric Co-Curator Megan Horn will facilitate a conversation around adaptation and reuse, human rights and social justice, climate change and sustainability, and the reaffirmation and celebration of communities, gender, ethnic, and racial identities. Admission is free, but reservations are required to receive the live stream link.

Registration is now open for Spring and Summer camps at the Newport Art Museum School. Spring Art Camps for ages 6-12 will be held April 10-14, and Summer Art Camps for ages 3-16 will be held from July 3-Aug. 11. The camps feature a wide range of themes and mediums designed for each age group to inspire and delight children as they work with talented teaching artists to create paintings, sculptures, comics, animation, fashion, and more. All materials will be provided, and registration is now open. www.newportartmuseum.org/camps

Save the Date! The Newport Art Museum’s Summer Art Party will take place on Friday, July 14, from 6-11 p.m. This event helps support the Museum's efforts to provide a space to spark reflection, curiosity, and discovery through Art Education and Community Programming throughout the year. This “Evening of Delights” will honor the fabulously talented artists Bob Dilworth and Ana Flores, who both challenge perceptions around critical topics of our time. Tickets and tables will go on sale starting Monday, March 20.

On View at the Museum

There’s still time to experience Joseph Norman: Works from the Permanent Collection on view until April 16. This exhibition showcases a selection of Norman’s prints and paintings from the Museum’s permanent collection along with recent works on loan from the artist, including three of Norman’s rarely seen large lithographic triptychs inspired by personal events, nature, and Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. From his small detailed prints to large narrative works, Norman shows his mastery of printmaking, painting, and storytelling.

Social Fabric Textiles & Contemporary Issues is a must-see exhibition, that brings together a diverse array of contemporary textile artists who are weavers, sculptors, quiltmakers, and visionaries to examine the complex issues of our time. Together, their practices demonstrate and reimagine the expressive and social functions of textiles.
