Spider-Man: No Way Home originally had Emma Stone and Kirsten Dunst

Spider-Man: No Way Home produced some of the most exciting comebacks in comic book movie history, but it could have been even more nostalgic, it has now been revealed.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returned to play their versions of Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man in the multiverse-centric Tom Holland threequel No Way Home. Several villains from both Maguire and Garfield's Spidey films also returned, but their love interests didn't.

However, it has now been confirmed that there were plans to bring back both Kirsten Dunst's MJ and Emma Stone's Gwen, but those ideas were eventually scrapped.

The revelation comes in the recently released book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, which was written by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards. An excerpt from the book explained that No Way Home writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna had written in Gwen, MJ, and even Sally Field's Aunt May.

"Sommers and McKenna, at various points, wrote versions of the story that incorporated Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and Sally Field’s Aunt May, but ultimately cut all those women when they decided that the story was already overstuffed," the excerpt read, as seen here via The Direct.

"The only female characters with significant screen time would be Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May and Zendaya’s MJ. Because the screenplay was constantly in flux, none of the actors could read a locked script, and they joined the project based on their faith in [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige], [Producer Amy Pascal], and director Jon Watts."

This wasn't the only Spider film to go through some changes. Recently, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Justin K Thompson revealed that the ending of the film, which saw Hailee Steinfeld's Gwen assemble a Spidey team, almost didn't end up that way.

"I was really worried about it until about six weeks before we finished the movie, and we added it. The movie kind of fell flat at the end and was really a bummer.

"We had a screening and thankfully we were able to come up with the strategy of how to bring all these characters back together, and bring the Spot back — because he didn't come back – and show Rio and Jeff, and tag all the characters."
