Spilled broccoli blocks Highway 1, backs up traffic near Nipomo

A spilled load of broccoli blocked part of Highway 1 near Nipomo around 3 p.m. on Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Caltrans was called in to sweep the broccoli from both the southbound lane, which was completely blocked by the spill, and the northbound lane, which was only partially blocked, according to CHP’s traffic incident page.

By about 3:20 p.m. both lanes had reopened, but the Caltrans sweeper was still needed to clean up the spilled produce, according to the incident log.

One-way traffic control was implemented on the highway as workers attempted to clean up the area. CHP warned of heavy traffic delays in the area due to the incident.

This is the second produce-related traffic incident in the county this week.

Last Friday, an overturned produce truck blocked a lane of Highway 101 for most of the day.
