At the turn of the 20th century, the United States was an industrial powerhouse, entering the world stage in a range of fields, from automobiles to filmmaking to the arts. In the field of architecture, the country began to develop a strong sense of identity. “There was a constant willingness to experiment and innovate, which helped to secure America’s prominent position on the architectural map and send its fresh ideas back into the wider world,” writes journalist Dominic Bradbury in the introduction to his 2020 book, The Iconic American House: Architectural Masterworks Since 1900 (Thames & Hudson, $65), which traces the United States’ residential development throughout the century to the current day.
The homes in this book, photographed by Richard Powers, span the country and the decades, from classics like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, to contemporary showstoppers like Olson Kundig’s The Pierre in Washington’s San Juan Islands. “In the modern era, the combination of [the United States’] pioneering spirit and an openness to ideas and incomers has helped to forge some of the most important and influential houses in the world,” writes Bradbury.
Here, we bring you a peek inside the magnificent homes from the book.
