Just because his film shares a name with a member of the X-Men doesn't mean Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy is pumped about the influx of superhero films.
Accepting his honor at the 2015 Independent Spirit Award for best first feature, Gilroy told his fellow indie filmmakers they were survivors against an onslaught of superhero films.
"Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry," said Gilroy. "We have survived and we have thrived and I think that's true spirit."
Gilroy's wife Rene Russo (who stars in Nightcrawler), appeared in two Thor films as the title character's mother, Frigga.
During his speech, he had high praise for his star Jake Gyllenhaal, who once was talked about to replace Tobey MaGuire in the original Spider-Man franchise, and was eyed for Warner Bros.' upcoming supervillain teamup movie Suicide Squad, but ultimately passed. His sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal starred in 2008's The Dark Knight.
The Independent Spirit Awards honors exclusively independent films, bringing together top Hollywood talent and independent filmmakers. Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell are co-hosting the 30th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, which is being broadcast live on IFC.
