The spirit was willing, but the flesh was sweaty: Even Palm Beach diehards seek cooler climates

Where did everybody go?

Even the "I'm staying put this summer" types are hard to find. Did that most recent heat wave wilt their fortitude and propel them to cooler climes?

Maybe. Or maybe they just decided to travel.

But we tracked a few down.

Kevin Byrne and Will Ameringer are ditching their NYC and Sag Harbor digs and heading across the ocean.

"Sag Harbor and NYC were getting to be the same," Kevin said. "Same people, same restaurants as Palm Beach. So we decided it would be interesting to spend the Palm Beach off-season in Paris."

They've bought a place in the 8th Arrondissement and are busy moving in. Then they're off to Cap Ferrat in August, and back to Paris for September and October. They return to Palm Beach in November, when Kevin promises to be "speaking French fluently."

Nous verrons.

Jimmy Borynack and Adolfo Zaralegui began their summer in Bermuda, joined by daughter Stephanie and grandchildren, where they intended to watch Stephanie's husband, Fred, cross the finish line of the Newport-to-Bermuda race. Fred was a crew member aboard previous ''Thrash to the Onion Patch'' winner Il Mostro.

Here's the thing. The red monster lost its bowsprit in near-tropical storm winds and had to limp back to Newport for a spit-and-patch repair before returning to its South Carolina homeport for a permanent fix.

Jimmy and Adolfo are now in Marbella where they are houseguesting with Marquesa Barbara San Damian and sending photos of the lavish beachfront breakfast spread to the uninvited back home. We hope they both get a sunburn.

More sightings:

The 104-year-old traveler Jane Smith was spotted in Saratoga Springs, where she shared a box at the historic race track with daughter Jay Keith and friends John Tatooles and Victor Moore.

"Everybody thought she was my new fiancee," joked John Hendrickson.

Merrilyn Bardes stayed in Palm Beach until after the Fourth, skipping her Newport Fourth of July party for the first time in years.

(To her credit, Merrilyn is the first person to send a DON'T Save-the-Date card so folks could make other plans for the weekend.)

She was at Friday night's preview party for The Newport Show, a three-day antique show that benefits the Newport Historical Society and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County.

Chuck Poole and Bruce Mazza Langmaid are at their Federal-era home on Maryland's Eastern Shore, where the celebrated the Fourth by decking their house with the biggest American flag in town and hosting Chuck's nephews.
