Spirituality columnist Norris Burkes to speak in Jackson

If you’ve ever wondered if there could be a better use for the "F-word," you’ll want to be present for the talk given by Chaplain Norris Burkes at Grace United Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct 22 at 7 p.m.

In his 45-minute talk titled, “Faith and the 5 other F words I live By,” the popular Jackson spirituality columnist will retell the stories found in his most-read columns.

Burkes’ talk includes "rib-tickling and poignant retellings" of his column stories about faith, fun, family, food and flights. The chaplain concludes his talk by relating the most powerful F word on earth, “Forgiveness.”

Chaplain Burkes is best known for his syndicated spirituality column that takes a humorous and hope-filled approach to everyday spirituality. The column can be found in 35 papers around the country, including the Jackson Sun.

In addition to numerous other awards, Burkes received the Will Rogers Humanitarian award in 2019 for his coverage of Chispa Project, a non-profit that his daughter, Sara, began to establish libraries in Honduran elementary schools. Sara will also be present to give a short presentation.

He has authored three books that retell the best of his newspaper columns. “Thriving Beyond Surviving” relates his experiences as a hospital chaplain. “Hero’s Highway” highlights the brave stories of combat wounded in Iraq. “No Small Miracles,” retells pediatric stories of the hospitalized children.

Burkes retired as an Air Force chaplain in 2014 and calls Auburn, California home where he resides with his wife Becky. They are the proud parents of four children and four grandsons.

There is an optional dinner available at 6 p.m. for $20, but the 7 p.m. speaking event is free.
