"Urban heat islands," according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, "occur when cities replace natural land cover with dense concentrations of pavement, buildings, and other surfaces that absorb and retain heat." And climate change is predicted to lead to longer and more severe heat waves during the summer, which causes uncomfortable living conditions for residents of cities.
