SpongeBob SquarePants Memes Are Getting Turned Into Action Figures
SpongeBob Squarepants memes have become so influential that Nickelodeon wants you to be able to hold them in your hands, you know, just in case you want to mock your friends in person. To celebrate the series' 20th anniversary, Nickelodeon is releasing a set of SpongeBob figurines that you can buy online.
Originally just a children's show, SpongeBob Squarepants has evolved into a cultural staple for The Millennials, with the show's fandom carrying the flamboyant sponge and his underwater friends well past the shelf life of most animated series. Take a minute and think about that: we've spent two decades with the likes of Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and SpongeBob. That's legitimately insane. In recent years, the show has seen a whole new life, routinely going viral thanks to the meme-ification of the series' most popular (and some very obscure) moments. Now you can appreciate those memes in all of their 3D, tangible glory.
The five figurines released feature Mocking SpongeBob, Imaginaaation SpongeBob, Surprised Patrick, Spongegar, and Handsome Squidward. That's all fine and well but also, where is my Krusty Krab Pizza? Where is Sweet Victory SpongeBob? Where the hell is my breathless SpongeBob who can lean against my phone at work? All I'm saying is that this is a great starting point Nickelodeon, but your job is not complete. Not yet.
The toys are available on Amazon starting today and currently go for $21.99, though the Mocking SpongeBob is sold out and/or not currently available. Until then, you'll just have to use your (spreads hands) imaginaaation.
If the internet and Nickelodeon have their way, SpongeBob won't be going anywhere any time soon. With multiple product collaborations, a Tony-nominated musical, two feature-length films, and a Super Bowl cameo, SpongeBob Squarepants is anything but irrelevant.
