Get your spook on. Spirit Halloween stores opening across Louisville, Southern Indiana

It's a sure sign of the coming of spooky season: empty, darkened strip mall storefronts brought back to life with ghoulish displays and fanciful costumes.

Halloween might be more than two months away, but those looking to start the haunt early have a few new options across Louisville from a familiar seasonal retailer.

Spirit Halloween plans to open three stores in Jefferson County, one of which at 9070 Dixie Highway is already up and running. A Clarksville, Indiana, location has also opened for the season.

Here's where the Halloween pop-ups are located this year. Louisville locations not yet open should be by the end of August, a company spokeswoman told The Courier Journal.

  • 4600 Shelbyville Road, next to Off Broadway Shoes

  • 9930 Linn Station Road (former Annie's Attic consignment) in the Plainview Village Center

  • 9070 Dixie Highway, next to Burlington

  • 945 E. Lewis and Clark Parkway (at the former Gordmans in Clarksville, Indiana)

As of mid-August, hours for the Dixie Highway and Lewis and Clark Parkway locations were 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Spirit Halloween sells adult and children's costumes, makeup, props, animatronics and indoor and outdoor decorations. Locations tend to change from year to year, as the company temporarily sets up shop in vacant storefronts.

Spirit Halloween is owned by Spencer Spirit Holdings Inc., the New Jersey-based parent company of mall mainstay Spencer's. Since its acquisition by Spencer's in 1999, Spirit Halloween has grown from 63 stores to some 1,400 pop-ups each Halloween season.

The National Retail Federation forecast consumer spending on Halloween to exceed $10 billion last year, with individuals spending an average of $102 on costumes, decorations, and candy.
