Spooky events, stomp grapes and the return of the Kings this weekend in Newport County

It’s the spookiest time of the year, and there are a few events happening this weekend in Newport County to mark the occasion.

There’s also a harvest festival, complete with grape stomping and pie eating, and the return of The Kings Lens and Friends. Have fun this weekend with these five local happenings.

Spoky Roam Around Rough Point

Grab your Halloween costume and head to the Newport estate of Doris Duke for a Spooky Roam Around Rough Point on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The event, which runs from 5 to 7 p.m., is free for Newport County residents and free transportation is available, though advanced registration for the shuttle are required. To learn more or to sign up for transportation, visit newportrestoration.org/event/spooky-roam-around-rough-point-2.

Treats Along the Trails

Spooky Season has arrived at the Norman Bird Sanctuary. Wear your best Halloween costume for a festive afternoon at its Treats on the Trails event on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Walk past graveyards and stop at stations that will offer goodies and yummy treats. Allow for one hour to visit all treat stations. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Tickets cost $15 for members, $20 for non-members and children ages 3 and younger are free. Purchase tickets at normanbirdsanctuary.org/events-calendar/2022/10/29/treats-along-the-trails.

YMCA Boo Bash

The Newport County YMCA is hosting its Boo Bash on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Valley Road facility. Show off your best costumes and enjoy some Halloween fun, including music, crafts, bounce houses, contests and more.

Harvest Festival at Newport Vineyards

After a two-year hiatus, the Harvest Festival is back for its fifth edition at Newport Vineyards. It’s two days of grape stomping, wine tasting, beer drinking and delicious eats.

Win the grape-stomping competition or the pie eating contest while listening to live music. There will also be a costume contest and prizes. There are four sessions over the two days, with one of the sessions already sold out.

The Kings Lens and Friends Return

Patrick Murphy closed his The Kings Lens and Friends gallery on Carroll Avenue this past summer, but he’s still hard at work. “The Show Must Go On” will be presented on Friday at the Jane Pickens Film & Event Center and will include the premiere of a short film titled “Friends Are Forever.”

The documentary by Alex Lawson and Shawn Cai tells the story of Murphy, a fourth-generation local, and The Kings Lens and Friends, which started with a dream and a camera and developed into a space for the arts.

Doors open at 5 p.m., with live musical performances by NovaOne And Ravi Shavi. Tickets cost $20, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. There will also be an after party at Parlor on Broadway.
