Sport shorts: Optimist volleyball matches to be held next week

Jun. 5—JAMESTOWN — North Dakota Optimists and North Dakota High School Coaches Association (NDHSCA) are again sponsoring the ND All-Star Volleyball series.

Coaches selected 24 of the best graduated-senior girls from across the state to participate in the two-match series. Players were selected by position and then named to either the Blue or Red team. Jamestown's Bernadette Newman and Carrington's Haley Wolsky were named to the Red team. Gracie Schumacher, a two-time state champ out of Linton/HMB, will be competing for the Blue team.

Newman, a second-year varsity team member, was an all-around threat for the Blue Jays. Her 214 kills accumulated across 17 conference matches ranked her fifth in the WDA for the most kills acquired overall. All told, the Jays' leading attacker hammered home 291 kills and recorded 37 aces. The senior earned 2022 first-team, all-state honors for her production this season.

Newman was also credited with 19 blocks and 267 digs in 23 matches. The Blue Jay standout will be competing at the University of Jamestown this fall.

Wolsky was the Cardinals' leading attacker this last season with 298 kills. She also accumulated 34 aces, made 23 blocks and popped up a whopping 428 digs in the last three months of her prep volleyball career.

The matches will be held on June 12 and June 13 at Fargo North High School and Bismarck Legacy respectively. Matches are set to begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $6 dollars for adults and $4 dollars for students at the door. Children age 12 and younger are free.
