PEORIA – It’s finally official: Academy Sports + Outdoors is opening a store in the Grand Prairie Plaza this summer.
Rumors flew this spring that the sporting goods outlet was coming to Peoria when work began on the vacant Gordmans building at the plaza early this spring. Though Academy Sports would not confirm it, the city of Peoria did, because the company’s name was on the construction work permits.
A news release issued by the Texas-based company Tuesday confirmed the opening. The 60,000-square-foot store will be the second in Illinois, and one of 13 to 15 new outlets the company plans to open across the country this year.
“We’re excited to be a new destination for the Peoria community to find everything they need to pursue their sports and outdoors passions with top national brands like Nike, adidas, YETI, Columbia, Carhartt, and many more,” said Sam Johnson, Academy’s executive vice president of retail operations, in the release. “At Academy Sports + Outdoors we deliver fun with a broad assortment of products at a great value and unmatched service that makes it easier for active families planning a day on the Illinois River, kids gearing up for summer fun, and anglers reeling in a big catch.”
The Peoria store will carry an assortment of athletic and casual shoes, sports and outdoors equipment, and clothing. It will also sell hunting and fishing licenses and provide a variety of services related to the products it sells, including free assembly of grills and bikes, fishing line winding and spooling, scope mounting and bore sighting.
The new store is expected to bring about 60 new jobs to the community. Apply for open positions at careers.academy.com.
