Sports Page adapts to changes

Feb. 16—A business launched to fill a void is still going strong nearly three decades later.

Carolyn Salvaggio, who founded Forty Fort-based Star Tresses Grand Salon and Day Spa in 1960, started the first Sports Page Great Haircuts for Men & Boys location in West Pittston in October 1994 to cater to a different crowd.

"A family friend and customer at my mom's shop told her to open a place for guys to get a haircut because all the old barbers were dying off," said current owner Stephen J. Salvaggio.

The business adapted to several changes throughout the years, including the merger of its Dallas and Forty Fort locations due to staffing shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic and the merger of its Clarks Summit and Dunmore locations to the Green Ridge section of Scranton this month due to rising rent costs.

"We were given little choice but to relocate given the circumstances put on the table from the landlords asking for out-of-sight rental increases and unreasonable expectations," Stephen J. Salvaggio said. "Forced to make a decision to stay in our present locations and increase haircut prices or make a change, I decided to merge the two locations."

The business' original location in Pittston Twp. relocated to Pittston about 2 1/2 years ago.

Sports Page currently operates four locations throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne counties in Forty Fort, Mountain Top, Pittston and Scranton.

The shops feature a variety of sports memorabilia from high school, college and professional sports teams.

"If you're a sports fan, it's a dream," Stephen J. Salvaggio said.

Carolyn Salvaggio also owned Star Beauty Academy schools in Pittston, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Bethlehem, and her son, Stephen, believes her reputation in the community boosted business for Sports Page.

"The last name is synonymous with success in the hair business," he said.

Tracy Lee Roche, general manager of Sports Page, an employee of the company since its infancy, cherishes the relationships formed with colleagues and longtime clients.

"You develop a family with all the different clients over 29 years," Roche said.

Sultanah Zielinski of Mount Cobb, who began working at the Green Ridge location about three weeks ago, quickly developed an affinity for the job.

"I've been doing hair for 10 years and men's cuts are my favorite," she said. "Stephen is great to work with and the clientele is awesome."
