England footballer Beth Mead has been voted 2022’s Sports Personality of the Year after playing a starring role in the Lionesses’ stunning European Championships victory this summer.

Mead becomes the first female footballer to win the award following England’s first major international title in 66 years, with the Lionesses defeating Germany in a thrilling final in front of 86,000 at Wembley Stadium.

Mead scored six goals at the Euros, picking up the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards, and was the overwhelming favourite to win the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year prize.

Ben Stokes finished second with Eve Muirhead in third.

“This is for women’s sport and women’s sport heading in the right direction,” Mead said. “Let’s keep pushing and let’s keep doing the right thing.”

England were named Team of the Year while manager Sarina Wiegman won Coach of the Year, as the Lionesses completed a clean sweep.

Beth Mead: “I’m speechless for once. I’m incredibly honoured to win this award. Wouldn’t have done it without the girls. The team have backed me. Yes, I’ve won this accolade, I’ve scored a few goals but I wouldn’t have done it without them.

“I wouldn’t have done it without my dad, my mum and all my family.

“This is for women’s sport and women’s sport heading in the right direction. Let’s keep pushing and let’s keep doing the right thing.”

Before the Sports Personality of the Year award, we remember those in sport who we lost in 2022. Doddie Weir and Shane Warne were among those who were taken too soon.

And it’s followed by the confirmation that Sarina Wiegman has won coach of the year!

“I feel very humbled, grateful, to receive this award. Without this incredible of players and human beings we could not have performed as we did, as well as the staff. The support I got from September 1 last year when I came in. I’ve been the lucky person to come in.

“We played at Wembley and broke records. Over 17 million people watched the final, and over 500 million watched the tournament. That is what has changed society. Now little girls are walking around with our names on our shirts.

“We will go to the World Cup next year and do our best, and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.”

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Lionesses win Team of the Year!

20:46 , Jamie Braidwood

England’s Lionesses have been named Team of the Year at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards following their groundbreaking success at the European Championships this summer.

Sarina Wiegman’s side defeated Germany in a thrilling final in front of 87,000 at Wembley Stadium as England won their first major international title in 66 years.

In a momentous moment for women’s sport in the UK, England’s victory was also watched by a TV audience of 17 million in the UK, while the Lionesses were praised for using their platform to demand for equal access to sport for girls in schools.

Led by captain Leah Williamson, England finished the year by extending their unbeaten run under Wiegman to 26 games, sealing qualification for next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and defeating the world champions United States in front of another sell-out crowd at Wembley.

Jill Scott: “Just to be here, such an iconic awards. A massive thank you for everyone’s support. We really had the support of the nation behind us.

“This Christmas, to think there will be little girls asking for football boots and embarking on their own journey. That’s all we can ask for.”

An incredible moment and a very special friendship.

Burrow accepts the award on behalf of his friend Doddie Weir, a former winner of the Helen Rollason Award who died last month following a battle with MND.

“I’m totally overcome to win this award,” Burrow says, with the aid of a computer screen connected through an eye-controlled keyboard.

Sinfield accepts the special award after his efforts to raise over £7m for MND causes. “Rob is the most inspirational bloke in the UK. He has inspired us to be better friends. In rugby the connections you have, the friends you make, it doesn’t stop when the whistle blows. Last month communities came together to support MND.

“Doddie used to say, MND isn’t incurable, it’s just underfunded. We will keep doing our best to bang the drum.”

A special award is also given to Kevin Sinfield, Burrow’s former team-mate, who has been raising money for MND causes since Burrow was diagnosed in 2019.

Time for the Helen Rollason Award, which is given “for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity”.

This year’s winner is Rob Burrow.

Earlier this year, fans and well-wishers took to social media to express support for the former Leeds Rhinos and England star, following a BBC documentary showing him coping with the effects of Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Speaking with the aid of a computer screen connected through an eye-controlled keyboard, Burrow responded to his family, his medical aides and detailed his feelings about day-to-day life with wife Lindsey.

“I’m a prisoner in my own body. I was such a hands-on dad, you hate to see your wife doing it alone,” he said.

“I didn’t think she had signed up to look after me so soon. She’s my very own superhero.”

A moment now for the Rugby League World Cups. For the first time this year, the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments were held at the same time and in the same country.

England’s men were stunned by Samoa in the semi-finals, who were then beaten by Australia in the final. Australia also won the women’s tournament but England were wheelchair champions.

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Beth Mead

Beth Mead: “It’s not something that I though would be possible, but the team who walked off that stage... I wouldn’t have played the football I played without them.

“The girls are like a family away from home. When things were difficult at home they were there to support me.

“I still pinch myself and need time to reflect on this year, but I’m so proud of what I’ve done and what my team has done.

“Anyone watching now, enjoy your football and don’t forget the reason why you started.”

Mead, who ruptured her ACL last month, has made it onto the stage without her crutches.

Beth Mead

The Arsenal forward was named player of the tournament in England’s Euro 2022 success and also won the golden boot after scoring six goals and adding five assists. Her international goal tally for the season of 20 was a new England record.

Mead: “I know I’m not going to share all them moments with my mum for the rest of her life anymore. So to share that moment with her last summer was just incredible. For me football has always been my first true love. My mum sacrificed so much, she worked two jobs. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Nearly a year down the line we found out it was actually incurable, she’s still fighting.”

Mead’s father, Richard: “2021 was a difficult year. We found out her mam was suffering from ovarian cancer. The diagnosis with her mam, that was a trigger I think to show the world what Beth Mead was really about. I think in the Euros she managed to do that. They’d won the Euros, she’d won player of the tournament, won the Golden Boot. Everything Beth has achieved, she’s achieved it for us as a family and for her mam.”

A few players, including Leah Williamson are away playing tonight, but Ellen White, Mary Earps, Ella Toone, Alessia Russo, Jill Scott, Lauren Hemp and Sarina Wiegman are all on stage.

“Growing up, we didn’t have female footballers to look up to as much,” says Toone. “We want to be role models.”

“I’m privileged to work with them,” says Wiegman. “They are a great group of people.”

It’s Lionesses time! “I felt we were destined to bring it home, not go home,” says Mary Earps, as England’s journey throughout the Euros is shown, from the group stages to Spain, Sweden, and Wembley...

“We weren’t that aware of how crazy it was getting,” captain Leah Williamson says. “We’ve changed the course of women’s football forever,” says Lucy Bronze.

And, to the tune of Freed from Desire, here they come!

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Ben Stokes

19:58 , Jamie Braidwood

And here is Ben Stokes, who is back home following England’s series victory over Pakistan: “Managed to land back in the country this morning. It’s been an amazing three months to look back on. Pakistan was another progression for our Test team. To say we’re the only team to whitewash Pakistan is incredible. Hopefully this team can keep setting records and make people want to watch Test cricket.

“We’re trying to get BazBall cancelled, but taking the job was an opportunity for me to do something new. Allowing people to go out and play with freedom, not worrying about failure.

“Speaking out about my situation [mental health], I take real pride in hearing I’ve helped a lot of people. When you go through bad times it makes the good times better.”

Ben Stokes

Stokes was voted Sports Personality of the Year in 2019 and is in the running again after a hugely successful year. He guided England to the T20 World Cup, holding his nerve under huge pressure, and has overseen three Test series victories since being appointed captain in April. On Tuesday, he helped England write history by becoming the first team to win 3-0 in Pakistan.

“Ben Stokes, Cricket Superman, swooping in whenever there’s a game that needs rescuing. Even the seemingly superhuman, face very human challenges. Just months after returning to cricket, Stokes was asked to lead England’s Test team. He decided the only way was up. Full throttle. No brakes. In a good of tradition and convention he sparked a revolution. Unthinkable. Unmissable. This is the year cricket’s Superman convinced other men they could fly.”

“I did fear that he would never play, I’m so glad he has. Ben Stokes is a force of nature,” says Joe Root.

Jos Buttler: “Huge pride in the whole group. Like everyone in the room tonight you have dreams but to go on and achieve the World Cup was special.”

There was more success for England’s T20 team, though, as they won the World Cup to add to their 50-over title. Jos Buttler’s team defeated Pakistan by five wickets to win the World Cup, and the England side are in Salford tonight.

“I want to wish everyone Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.”

“He was unmissable, uncatchable. The world has seen nothing like Usain Bolt.”

The world’s fastest man and 19-time global sprint champion is the lifetime achievement award winner!

“I feel accomplished. I’ve accomplished all I wanted to in my sport so it’s a great feeling to know that with determination and sacrifice that I could achieve what I want. That’s what I say to people, believe in yourself and go out and do your best.

“For me [breaking the 100m record] was about confidence. I was so confident and prepared that I could go out and break the record. I was focussed and about going out to prove myself.”

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Jake Wightman

Jake Wightman, chatting to Gabby Logan on how things have changed since his 1,500m gold medal: “Sadly, winter starts again and you start where you were. It’s a big milestone ticked off in my career. On the final straight there was only fear, the shcok on my face was ‘I’ve actually done this’.

“I wish I could say I heard my Dad commentating, but I didn’t. It was special, though, for him to be part of the atmosphere.

“Tokyo was scarring for me, coming away with 10th. Throughout the winter, you realise that you can sulk or be motivated. We went to some hard graft where I did a lot more mileage. Throughout the easter and summer, that hard work started to pay off.”

Jake Wightman on winning 1500m world championship gold in Oregon, becoming Britain’s first champion in the event for nearly 40 years, as his father Geoff was commentating on the race in the stadium:

“I spoke to my Dad the day before and his advice was, ‘How often do you get to stand on the start line of a global final that you have to run to win’.

“The main thing you guage off is the noise of the crowd and I just assumed it was because Jakob Ingebrigtsen was coming. I think everyone in the athletics world was shocked by it as well, including my Mum and Dad.

“I’m glad he could enjoy and share in as much of the emotion as I can, because it has been his journey as much as mine.”

Attention now turns to the World Athletics Championships, which this year took place in Eugene, Oregon. Luara Muir, Keely Hodkinson and Dina Asher-Smith won medals, but there was one standout gold for Great Britain...

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Young Sports Personality of the Year

19:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Jessica Gadirova is in the final three of the Young Sports Personality of the Year shortlist, along with 18-year-old diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and 14-year-old skateborder Sky Brown, who won last year.

And the award goes to Jessica Gadirova!

“Thank you to my coaches and British Gymnastics, I couldn’t have done it without you guys!”

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Jessica Gadirova

19:20 , Jamie Braidwood

“It started with the Commonwealth Games, to come away with team gold was incredible. At the Europeans we achieved silver and qualified for the World Championships in Liverpool. It was an incredible experience and to achieve second in the team final was amazing. To top it off, gold in the floor. I knew it was the last competition so I gave it my all.”

On her sister Jennifer, who is in the crowd: “She means the world to me, we’ve grown up side by side. I couldn’t imagine not being there with her. I love you Jen!”

Jessica Gadirova is also up for Young Sports Personality of the Year, which will be announced next.

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Jessica Gadirova

Jessica Gadirova

The 18-year-old gymnast has had a stellar 2022, capped by becoming only the fifth British athlete to win an individual world title in artistic gymnastics. Gadirova achieved that with her floor routine in Liverpool in November, having previously claimed team silver and all-around bronze. A team bronze medallist at the Olympics last summer, Gadirova also retained her European floor title.

“To perform, you’ve got to trust. Believe in the delicate balance between body and gravity. Every up and down will leave you ultimately in the same place. Trust in your mind, in your memory, that on the biggest stage you will find your best performance. Sometimes, though, it all gets stripped away. No hiding place. No distractions. When you’re all alone with just the stage, trust the process, then let it flow. And believe that however high you fly, you’re still aiming upwards. There’s even more to come, and that you can trust.”

Eddie Butler, the legendary rugby commentator and former international known as the “voice of Wales”, died earlier this year at the age of 65. Where to begin with football in 2022? Liverpool were Carabao Cup and FA Cup champions, as they won the first two legs of a possible quadruple. Manchester City were Conti Cup champions, before Chelsea got revenge in the Women’s FA Cup final. Chelsea also retained their Women’s Super League crown for a third year in a row.

In Scotland, Celtic won the Scottish Premiership and Rangers won the Scottish Cup, but the Ibrox side were denied on penalties by Frankfurt in Sevilla.

Manchester City edged out Liverpool in a dramatic Premier League title race, on the final day of the season. Then, in the final match of the season, Real Madrid defeated Liverpool to win the Champions League.

There will be plenty more football to come later in the show.

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Ronnie O’Sullivan

19:08 , Jamie Braidwood

O’Sullivan chats with Gary Lineker live from Dubai, where he is on holiday with his family.

“I have an appetite to love the game, I love competing and when you love what to do you get out of bed in the morning to do it. When I won the World Championship in 2012, 2013 it felt comfortable and like I could go again. I cherish it more now I’m older. The top players rise to the occasion, especially at the Crucible where there is more pressure.”

On an eighth title: “I don’t know. When I turned pro I was happy with one. I was to get eight, fantastic, but it’s tough these days. I don’t know if age is catching up with me. I’ll have a good idea a week before the Crucible if I can to do. If I’m in form, I’ll have a chance.”

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Ronnie O’Sullivan

19:03 , Jamie Braidwood

Ronnie O’Sullivan

Snooker’s biggest star claimed his seventh World Championship title in 2022 with an 18-13 win over Judd Trump, equalling Stephen Hendry’s record and becoming the oldest winner of the crown at 46. O’Sullivan is ranked world number one and also won the Champion of Champions and Hong Kong Masters titles this year. He has never won the SPOTY title.

“Ronnie O’Sullivan - Rocket Man. Snooker from another dimension. Brilliance on cue. He grew up immersed in the game. But his life has always had other angles. Fast, out of this world, the rocket. We saw the lightening certainty but not the clouds within. But he had a table to cling to. Our eyes told us he was the greatest but history demands proof. In snooker, it weighs excellence not just in silver but in Sheffield steel. For 30 years we’ve been drawn to Ronnie. Now, could he reach the mark made by Stephen Hendry? The king at his table, the greatest at his mightiest. The Rocket.”

Sports Personality of the Year 2022

Rachael Blackmore and Sam Waley-Cohen, the winning jockeys of the Gold Cup and Grand National respectively, are at the ceremony following their victories in the biggest races in horse racing. Blackmore made more history this year as the first female jockey to win the Gold Cup.

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Eve Muirhead

18:57 , Jamie Braidwood

“I’ve been at my fair share of Olympics, eventually getting to the top of the podium came with a lot of hard work. It was a dream come true,” Muirhead tells Clare Balding. “Pyeongchang was my hardest Olympics. Coming fourth by less than an inch. After qualifying for Beijing we did it the hard way but I learned a ton, about how to get myself back from failure. Before I knew it we were celebrating a gold medal.

“I’ve retired from curling now but I miss the sport.”

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Eve Muirhead

18:56 , Jamie Braidwood

“My dad was a world class curler and I always wanted to be like him,” says Muirhead. “I was just obsessed with the sport. I think to be a successful skip you need to have the leadership side of it, but that’s just my nature. I definitely have had a lot of low points in my career. I needed to train harder, I needed to practice harder if I wanted to be anywhere near the top of the podium. To be standing on the top of the podium after it all was very, very special.”

After going so close at the Pyeongchang Games, there was a glorious redemption for Muirhead in Beijing. ,

Good evening and welcome live coverage of the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award. The shortlist was revealed on Tuesday, with Beth Mead and Ben Stokes joined by Ronnie O’Sullivan, Eve Muirhead, Jessica Gadirova and Jake Wightman.

England and Arsenal footballer Mead is the frontrunner after her goals and assists guided the Lionesses to the Euros trophy this summer, while England cricket captain Stokes was pivotal in his side’s T20 World Cup win this year.

Elsewhere: O’Sullivan sealed a historic seventh world snooker title to become joint-record holder; teenage gymnast Gadirova took home gold at the world and European championships; middle-distance runner Wightman also claimed world championship gold; and Muirhead led Team GB to curling gold at the Winter Olympics. Tonight’s winner will be decided by fan vote.
