Sports scores, highlights: Durfee field hockey tournament bound, Somerset beats Apponequet

The fall sports season is underway in the Fall River area.

Take a look at the highlights from Wednesday's local high school action:

Field hockey: Durfee vs. Dighton-Rehoboth

SCORE: Durfee 3, Dighton-Rehoboth 2

LOCATION: Durfee

RECORD: Durfee, 8-1-2 (4-0 in Southeast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers avenged an earlier loss with Dighton-Rehoboth at home. Shakira Cadet (assist), Kacey Curran and Toni Freitas each scored goals for Durfee, who came back to win after a two-goal deficit. Emily Curran collected an assist. Kailey Hutchinson made two saves in net for the victory. "Today we switched our lineup a little to try for an offensive push and that paid off," Hilltopper head coach Nicole Henrique said. "The team never gave up and continued to push until the end and came out on top this time."

NEXT UP: Durfee hosts Brockton on Friday.

Boys soccer: Somerset Berkley vs. Apponequet

SCORE: Somerset Berkley 3, Apponequet 2

HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders edged league opponent Apponequet at home. Cam Freitas, James Doucette, and Seth Lee (assist) each netted goals for SBR. Nicolas Scanlon picked up an assist. Evan Furtado collected the win in net after making two saves.

NEXT UP: The Raiders host Durfee on Friday.

Golf: Westport vs. Bishop Connolly

SCORE: Westport 9, Bishop Connolly 0

LOCATION: Acoaxet Club

DATE: Oct. 5

RECORD: Westport, 5-5 (5-3 in Mayflower)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Wildcats defeated Bishop Connolly at home. Individual match winners for Westport were Avery Vivieros, Owen Boudria, Ben Bernier, Bryton Graham, Cooper Spirlet and Cole Boudria. Owen Boudria had the days low round with a 42.

NEXT UP: The Wildcats play a rematch with the Cougars on Tuesday.

Girls volleyball: Joseph Case at Dighton-Rehoboth

SCORE: Joseph Case, 3 Dighton-Rehoboth 0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-5)

LOCATION: Dighton-Rehoboth

DATE: Oct. 5

RECORD: Joseph Case, 10-1 (8-0 in South Coast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cardinals won easily over league opponent Dighton-Rehoboth on the road. Hannah Storm had 10 kills and 7 digs for Case. Olivia Silva finished with 26 assists, five aces and an impressive 17-point serving run in the third set. Jamie Moniz contributed seven kills and two blocks. "All 17 members of the Cardinal team got in the game and contributed in a positive way," Cardinals head coach Brendan Kelly said. "It was a great team win."

NEXT UP: The Cardinals travel to Durfee on Thursday.

Girls volleyball: Atlantis Charter vs. Avon

SCORE: Avon 3, Atlantis Charter 0 (17-25, 18-25, 11-25)

LOCATION: Atlantis Charter

DATE: Oct. 5

RECORD: Atlantis Charter, 3-5

HIGHLIGHTS: The Tritons lost their match against Avon at home. Liz Perez had two aces and two kills. Victoria Gomes finished with four aces, three kills and four digs. Rebecca de Moreas chipped in with four aces and five kills.

Girls volleyball: Westport vs. Bishop Connolly

SCORE: Westport 3, Bishop Connolly 0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-14)

LOCATION: Westport

DATE: Oct. 5

RECORD: Westport, 6-4 (3-1 in Mayflower Large); Bishop Connolly 2-6 (1-3 in Mayflower)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Wildcats swept all three sets against Bishop Connolly at home.  Kyleigh Finglas had 10 kills, seven service points and four aces for Westport. Taylor Perry chipped in with 13 assists, three service points, and an ace. Jayda Pequita finished with eight service points and five aces. Braylin Montigny ended with six service points and three aces. Lainey Vanvoorhis led Connolly with seven kills, and Kirstyn Mello (libero) finished with nine digs and an ace. "Overall, Westport just played smarter than the [us]," Cougars head coach Caylee Coelho said. "As a team, we need to brush this loss off and move onto our next opponent."

NEXT UP: The Wildcats host Avon on Friday while the Cougars host West Bridgewater on Friday.

SCORE: Somerset Berkley 3, Wareham 1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19)

RECORD: Somerset Berkley, 5-5 (3-5 in South Coast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders took three of four sets to win their match against league opponent Wareham at home. Annabella Karpicz had two aces, 15 kills and seven digs for SBR. Abigail Vieira chipped in with four aces, eight kills and 14 digs. Cali Leger finished with six aces and 10 digs.

NEXT UP: The Raiders travel to Bishop Stang on Friday.

Cross country: Somerset Berkley at Seekonk

SCORE: Seekonk 20, Somerset Berkley boys 35; Seekonk 15, Somerset Berkley girls 50

LOCATION: Seekonk

RECORD: Somerset Berkley boys 1-3, Somerset Berkley girls 0-4

HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders dropped their meet against league opponent Seekonk on Tuesday. Jack Hansen had a great run for SBR, finishing with a fourth-place time of 16:01 for the 2.65 mile course. Logan Pacheco took sixth and Matthew Barboza placed seventh overall. Grace Kayata was the top girl finisher followed by teammate Breannah McKeon. "Seekonk's course is short but tough, and the weather proved to be a great challenge for the athletes," Raiders head coach Keegan LaRue said.

NEXT UP: SBR faces Greater New Bedford, Dighton-Rehoboth on Tuesday.
