Sports scores, highlights: Durfee girls soccer beats elements, league opponent Brockton

FALL RIVER — The Durfee girls soccer team proved they were 'Topper tough' when it mattered on Thursday.

The Hilltoppers overcame the rainy elements to come away with a 4-1 victory over Brockton in a Southeast Conference showdown at Max Aldrich field on the campus of B.M.C. Durfee High school.

The win improves Durfee to 8-3-1 and 2-2 in Southeast Conference.

"This game was a full team effort to defeat Brockton," Durfee head coach Amie Lauren Roach said. "The team worked beautifully as a whole and dominated the entire game."

Freshman Maddie Hargraves netted a pair of goals for the Hilltoppers. Other goal scorers were Emma McDonnell and senior captain Destani Alua-Rioux.

Durfee hosts New Bedford on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cardinals tied their game with Atlantis Charter on the road. Case keeper Ethan Pires made six saves in the match for the shutout. "This was a much better result for us today versus our first match in which Charter defeated us," Cardinals head coach Steve Manteiga said. "Both teams played hard under poor conditions. It basically came down to lack of finishing with some good goaltending that would keep it scoreless."

NEXT UP: Case hosts Apponequet on Friday.

Boys soccer: Westport at Holbrook

SCORE: Westport 1, Holbrook 0

LOCATION: Holbrook

RECORD: Westport, 10-0-1 (5-0-1 in Mayflower Comprehensive)

HIGHLIGHTS: Coltrane McGonigle scored the lone goal of the contest to lift the Wildcats to a win over Holbrook on the road. Hunter Brodeur had an assist on the goal for Westport. Noah Amaral made three saves for his eighth shutout of the season. The back four of Marcos Dutra Africano, Ryan Borges, Nick DosVais, and Zachary Lopes played an outstanding game.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cougars lost a close game at home to league opponent West Bridgewater. Dimitrios Tzevelekos scored the lone goal for Connolly on an assist from Chris Guzman.

Girls volleyball: Joseph Case

SCORE: Joseph Case 3, Apponequet 0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-17)

RECORD: Joseph Case, 14-1 (10-0 in South Coast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Cardinals swept  all three sets against league opponent Apponequet on their annual Dig Pink game at home. Olivia Silva finished with a game-high 29 assists for Case. Jamie Moniz and Hannah Storm had nine and eight kills, respectively. Loagan Brown finished with eight kills and Sophia Conos finished with six kills. Brianna Campos played great on serve reception.

NEXT UP: The Cardinals travel to Seekonk on Monday.

Golf: Durfee at Dartmouth

SCORE: Dartmouth 109, Durfee 90

LOCATION: Allendale Country Club

DATE: Oct. 13

RECORD: Durfee, 9-5 (4-4 in Southeast Conference)

HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers dropped their regular season finale against league opponent Dartmouth. Notable Durfee golfers were Ethan Tho (42), Brady Sullivan (43) and Dan Matuszek (45).

NEXT UP: The Hilltoppers take part in the SEC tournament on Friday.
