Sports scores, highlights: Durfee swim and dive teams come up short against Middleboro
The winter high school season is underway for Fall River area teams.
Take a look at highlights from Thursday's local high school action:
Boys Swimming: Durfee at Middleboro
SCORE: Middleboro 85, Durfee 61
LOCATION: Middleboro
DATE: Jan. 5
RECORD: Durfee, 2-1
HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers were defeated by Middleboro on the road. Winners for Durfee includes Michael Harrington in the 200 free (2:17.53) and Yasin Mahmoud in the 100 breaststroke (1:30.65). Harrington was part of the winning 200 free relay with Cooper Long, Jack Fitzgerald, and William Rumsey (1:52.65). "All athletes stepped up at varying degrees, but special performances were had by Tim Archambault in the 200 IM and William Pierce," Hilltopper head coach Christopher Poliseno said.

Girls Swimming: Durfee at Middleboro
SCORE: Middleboro 101, Durfee 79
LOCATION: Middelboro
DATE: Jan. 5
RECORD: Durfee, 2-2
HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers came up short against Middleboro on the road. Emma McDonnell was also a double winner for Durfee in the 50 free (28.60) and 100 breaststroke (1:22.08). Other winners for the Hillltoppers in the meet include a state championship qualifying score 223.90 from Rachael Silva, Aimee Tiebout with a career-best time of 2:16.90 in the 200 free, along with a winning time of 6:23.08 in the 500 free. Avery Antunes took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:18.08. Antunes, and Tiebout teamed up with Gillian Tiburtino in the 200 and 400 free Relay, winning both events with times of 1:57.68 and 4:29.20. Freshmen Claire Bjerre and Sarah Raposa each showed off some impressive skills in the breaststroke and diving events, respectively.

Indoor Track and Field: Somerset Berkley vs. Dighton-Rehoboth
SCORE: Somerset Berkley boys 44, Dighton-Rehoboth 42; Dighton-Rehoboth 51, Somerset Berkley girls 35
LOCATION: Greater New Bedford
DATE: Jan. 5
RECORD: Somerset Berkley boys, 2-0; Somerset Berkley girls, 1-1
HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders split their meet with league opponent Dighton-Rehoboth. Winners for the boys were Derrick Camara (55 hurdles), Andrew Heroux (mile) and Cam Rose (300). SBR's 4x400 relay team of Rose, Ben Miller, Joseph Ramos and Dean Gobeil took first place with a time of 4:03.7. For the girls, Cali Leger took first in the shot put. Other top finishers include Emily Carr (55 hurdles) and Marissa Medeiros (600).

Indoor Track and Field: Diman vs. Southeastern
SCORE: Diman girls 51, Southeastern 49; Southeastern 80, Diman boys 19
LOCATION: Wheaton College
DATE: Jan. 5
RECORD: Diman girls, 4-0; Diman boys 2-2
HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals indoor track and field team split their meet with league opponent Southeastern. The Diman girls remain undefeated after a close meet against the Hawks. The meet came down to the last event of the day, 4x400, where the team of Isabelle Chekares, Alexah Pedder, Grace Flattery, and Eden McCausland won with a time of 4:45. Winning events for the girls were Inez Medeiros in the 55 (7.90) and the 300 (45.47). Emma Foley was also a double winner in the 55 hurdles (10.60) and the long jump (15' 3). Kaitlyn Nickelson was victorious in the high jump (5'0). The Bengal boys lost against a tough Southeastern opponent. TeyVon DeVoe won the shot put event fpr Diman with a throw of 35' 8. Nathan Nascimento had a pair of second-place finishes in the 55 (7.03) and the 300 (40.59). Kyle Stang took a third in 1000 (3:11) and in the shot put (29' 5).
NEXT UP: The Bengals take on West Bridgewater at Wheaton College on Thursday.
