Sports scores, highlights: Somerset Berkley hockey rolls, Diman basketball gets first win

The winter high school season is underway for Fall River area teams.

Ice Hockey: Somerset Berkley vs. Mt. Hope

HIGHLIGHTS: The Raiders opened their season with a bang after beating Mt. Hope in the opening rounds of the Prenda Cup semifinal. Kein Stafford and Jack Rothwell each netted three goals in the victory for SBR. Davis Sullivan and Liam Derocher each scored a pair of goals. Cory Huck collected the win in net.

NEXT UP: The Raiders will play against Apponequet in the Prenda Cup finals Saturday.

Ice Hockey: Diman/Durfee/Westport vs. Apponequet

SCORE: Apponequet 5, Diman/Durfee/Westport 2

LOCATION: Driscoll Ice Arena

DATE: Dec. 14

RECORD: Diman, 0-1

HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals lost in the opening rounds of the Prenda Cup tournament to Apponequet. Freshman Owen Vernon scored his first varsity goal and played solid defense on the first unit. Bryce Medeiros scored Diman's other goal, burying a rebound that came off of Jacob Almeida's initial net drive. Almeida and Landen Freitas were relentless on the puck all night. "They will bounce back and turn up the heat moving forward," Bengals head coach Marc O'Connor said.

NEXT UP: The Bengals face Mt. Hope in the consolation game Saturday.

Boys basketball: Diman at Atlantis Charter

SCORE: Diman 58, Atlantis Charter 40

LOCATION: Atlantis Charter

DATE: Dec. 14

RECORD: Diman, 1-1; Atlantis Charter, 1-2

HIGHLIGHTS: The Bengals captured their first win of the season, beating Atlantis Charter on the road. Sam Perry and Anthony DeJesus each finished 13 points for Diman. Sy’air Neal also had nine points in the victory. Miquel Pimental scored a game-high 16 points for the Tritons. Angel Martinez and Izzy Aponte each had five points while Kam Silva and DJ Adediran ended with four points apiece. "Great to get the first win," Bengals head coach Tom Librera said. "We had to earn it against a well-coached, athletic Atlantis Charter team."

NEXT UP: Diman travels to Somerset on Friday while the Tritons travel to Old Colony Friday.

Wrestling: Durfee vs. Canton

SCORE: Canton 42, Durfee 36

LOCATION: Durfee

DATE: Dec. 14

RECORD: Durfee, 0-1

HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltoppers suffered a tough loss to Canton in their home opener. Ladaynian Mendes, Kayden Chaney, Ethan Martin, Lucas DeCampos, and Calfeny Moreira earned pins for Durfee. Seth Choun won by forfeit in the 126 division. Martin and Moreira each earned their first varsity wins.

NEXT UP: The Hilltoppers will next compete at the Brookline tournament on Saturday.

Girls Swimming: Durfee at Cardinal Spellman

SCORE: Durfee 87, Cardinal Spellman 64

LOCATION: Massasoit Community College

DATE: Dec. 14

RECORD: Durfee, 1-1

HIGHLIGHTS: The Hilltopper girls swim team won their first meet of the season against Cardinal Spellman. Individual winners for Durfee were were Emma McDonnell in the 50 free (28.20) and Gillian Tiburtino in the 100 free (1:14.53). McDonnell, Tiburtino combined with Avery Antunes and Aimee Tiebout to win the 200 free relay (1:59.90) and the 400 relay (4:34.25) with latter being the closest by .21 seconds. Paitynn Botelho had a great meet along with Abigail Saunders and Zoie Mussotte.

NEXT UP: The Hilltoppers travel to Bishop Stang on Tuesday.
