Spotify Creates A ‘Scientifically Designed’ Push Playlist For Mums Giving Birth

These days a decent playlist is as much part of the must-have birth kit as a pair of disposable pants, particularly as 80% of mums say they find music helpful when giving birth. And that’s the thinking behind the launch of Spotify’s official ‘push playlist.’

Yep, the streaming service has teamed up with Jacques Moritz, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Manhattan’s New York-Presbyterian Hospital to curate a ‘scientifically designed’ birth tracklist which aims to help mums-to-be keep their cool in the delivery suite.

Make. It. Stop. Depending on your music taste the playlist could have you pushing harder to escape quicker! [Photo: Rex Features]

Designed to ‘mirror’ the birth experience of the mother, Dr Moritz chose tracks that would start slow and mellow, then ramp up for the excitement of pushing, and finally chill things down when your newborn comes kicking and screaming into the world.

“Hospitals, particularly delivery rooms, can be noisy and disconcerting,” explains Dr Moritz. “ A good playlist helps distract mothers from these sounds and better manage fear and pain, leading to a more positive delivery experience."

Songs like 'Just Breathe’ by Pearl Jam and 'Don’t Leave Me’ by Regina Spektor open the birth concert, followed ironically, and possibly literally, by Coldplay’s 'Don’t Panic’ Lucinda Williams’s ‘Fruits of My Labor’ and David Bowie’s ‘Under Pressure.’ You gotta give it to the man, he’s got a sense of humour.

He’s also slightly on the optimistic side considering that the playlist is only two hours and nine minutes long, while the average childbirth lasts between 12 and 24 hours. And hitting repeat while in the throes of labour could be somewhat problematic.

But who are we to argue with science?
