Music streaming service, Spotify, has launched a new pet playlist featuring anxiety-reducing songs to keep your dogs and cats calm.

The Pet Playlist cleverly allows owners to tailor-make playlists based on their pet's personality types.

After conducting research, the team at Spotify found that music can help relieve stress in pets, as well as boost their happiness and keeping them company. They said: "We dug our paws into the subject and conducted a study on how pet owners use music with their pets. We found that 71% of pet owners surveyed play music for their pets."

How can you create a 'pet playlist'?

1. To begin with, Spotify will ask you which animal you'd like to create a playlist for (you can choose from dogs, cats, birds, hamsters and iguanas).

2. You'll then be presented with a slider bar to find the right traits (such as shy, energetic and friendly).

3. Once Spotify has decided what will work for your pet, you will be presented with a playlist specifically for your pet's needs. To finish, add a photo, your pet's name and play your furry-friends their favourite songs.

Neil Evans, a pet physiologist and professor at the University of Glasgow, told the Daily Mail: "While there is a lot of scientific research that has shown that short periods of music can make dogs more relaxed, we have shown that providing dogs with varied auditory enrichment can be used to reduce stress and anxiety over longer periods of time

"When dogs have appropriate auditory enrichment they may bark less, lie down and sleep more, and their body’s are in a more relaxed physiological state."

Many pets who are left on their own during the day can suffer from heightened levels of loneliness. While having music on in the background won't ever replace the presence of their owners, researchers have found it can help.

RSPCA dog welfare expert, Dr Samantha Gaines, says: "Research is increasingly showing the effect of music on dog behaviour. The type of music a dog listens to is important and research has shown that some music can help dogs relax while other types may have a less beneficial effect so it’s really great Spotify have curated and produced music with dogs in mind."
