Spring Fling Day 1 top moments: Pearl-Cohn girls win team title, 3 others runners-up

MIRFREESBORO - Pearl-Cohn snapped a 14-year girls track state title drought on Tuesday to headline a strong day at MTSU's Dean A. Hayes Stadium from Metro Nashville Public Schools in Class A and Class AA.

The Lady Firebirds finished with 88 points — nine more than runner-up East Nashville, which had 79 points. It marked the program's first title since winning the 2008 Class A/AA championship.

Jakayla Morris won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9 inches. Errianna Thomas won the 400 meters (48.43) and Cha'raya Hawkins won the 200 (25.24). And the team's 400 relay and 1,600 relay teams won.

East Nashville was led by Aniyah Marshall's three titles — winning the high jump (5-3), 100 hurdles (15.92) and winning the pentathlon (3,050 points).

Pearl-Cohn's boys was runner-up to Alcoa for the second straight year and M.L. King was runner-up in the Class AA girls meet, scoring 79 points —12 fewer than champion Signal Mountain.

Avia Lane led M.L. King with four titles, winning the 100 (12.16) and the 200 (24.78) and was on the 800 relay and 1,600 relays that won titles.

Oakland soccer avenges 2021 Spring Fling loss to Houston in OT

It took overtime, a lightning delay and a downpour to decide the Oakland-Houston Class AAA state soccer tournament quarterfinal match, but the Patriots advanced to the semifinals for the second straight season.

Brayden Wilson's goal in the 98th minute was the difference, as Oakland avenged a loss to Houston in last year's state semis, a match that went to penalty kicks before being decided.

Back-to-back Beaty titles with a twist

A member of the Beaty family won a state track title for the second straight year.

Freshman Reese Beaty won the Class A shot put title a year after her older sister Gabby Beaty won it. Reese won with a throw of 42-8¼, winning by more than six feet. Gabby was sixth with a throw of 32-8½.

The throw is a school record.

Reese, a multi-sport athlete, helped lead York to the Class 2A basketball state runner-up.

"This is my first year ever throwing," Reese said. "At the first of the year I didn't know what I was doing."

Community softball upsets Summertown

Days after pulling off an upset against Bledsoe Community to make it to the Class 2A state tournament, the Viqueens continued their momentum beating one of the tournament favorites in Summertown 2-0 for their first tournament win.

Community scored both of its runs in the fourth inning while freshman pitcher Taylar Wessner only allowed two hits in the circle. Summertown won last year's Class A state championship and moved to Class 2A this year.

First-time winners

Lincoln County softball, STEP Prep soccer, Valor Collegiate Academy soccer and Watertown baseball also all won their first state tournament games Tuesday afternoon.

Valor Collegiate used a pair of penalty kicks to beat Soddy Daisy 2-1 while STEM Prep crushed McKenzie 9-0.

Watertown and Lincoln County each one their games by a run with the Purple Tigers beating Loudon 1-0 and the Lady Falcons scoring two runs in the sixth inning to beat Brighton 4-3.

Goodpasture baseball routs Silverdale

The Cougars had arguably the most dominant outing of any baseball team that played Tuesday.

Leading 8-0 three innings, Goodpasture scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth run-ruling the Seahawks 18-1 to open tournament play. Five Cougars had two or more RBIs with Tanner Lane leading all players with four.

Sherman Anderson and Carson Rucker each drove in three runs for the Cougars.
