Spring notebook: NFA boys lacrosse wins thriller; Killingly boys golf impressive in opener

The spring season is underway for boys volleyball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls tennis, and boys golf.

The Norwich Free Academy boys lacrosse team won a thrilling Eastern Connecticut Conference matchup against Fitch. The Wildcats topped the Falcons in overtime on a goal from Conor Gaughan. NFA (2-1) travels to E.O. Smith on Saturday (April 22) before hosting Woodstock Academy (April 25).

The Norwich Free Academy boys volleyball team has won three straight matches to improve to 4-2. The Wildcats host Glastonbury on Saturday (April 22) and Comp Science on April 24.

The Killingly boys golf team returned from their annual spring trip to Myrtle Beach and swept all five matches in an ECC Division II match against Waterford. Killingly, which got career low rounds from Harrison Giambattista and Matt Card, hosts Bacon Academy on April 25 at Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam.

Boys lacrosse

Conor Gaughan scored three goals, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to lift Norwich Free Academy to a thrilling 12-11, victory over Fitch … Logan Jenkins led the Wildcats with five goals and one assist … Anthony Ballestriini had two goals and one assist, Tommy Brunelli added a goal and three assists, Cortlan Beetle chipped in one goal and one assist, while Patrick Lawson made 14 saves for the  Wildcats (2-1) … Josh Lodyko and Roman McElwee netted one goal apiece but Norwich Tech-Windham Tech (2-2) fell to Law, 10-2, at Milford.

Girls lacrosse

Molly Page poured in a game-high five goals but Norwich Free Academy fell to Hamden, 16-10 … Lauren Friedrich collected two goals and two assists, Alice Rourke scored two goals, and Sophia Smith finished with 13 saves for the Wildcats (1-2) … Friedrich scored three goals and Hayleigh Young added one goal in NFA’s 19-4 loss against East Lyme … The Wildcats fell to 1-3 …  Emily Lamparelli scored four goals and Riley Ritchotte netted two goals but Killingly fell to Montville, 16-6 … Laura Farquhar and Illy Malarkey each had one assist for Killingly (1-3) … Griswold-Norwich Tech lost 21-2 to Waterford … Emily Aviles scored both goals for the Wolverines (2-3).

Boys volleyball

Jhon Lopez Choc collected 15 digs, six assists and five aces and Keegan Johnston had 10 kills and nine digs to lead Norwich Free Academy to a 25-19, 24-26, 25-22 and 25-22 win against SMSA … Rhys Surprenant chipped in eight digs and three aces for the Wildcats (3-2) … Evan Keith had four kills and three blocks and Gage Hinkley had six aces and three kills as NFA captured its third straight win with a 25-5, 25-21 and 21-18 sweep over HMTCA … Lopez Choc had eight digs, seven aces, and one kill for the Wildcats (4-2).

Boys golf

Harrison Giambattista had a career low round of 2 under par 33, while Matt Card had a career low round of 1 under par 34 to lead Killingly to a season opening 7-0 victory against Waterford at  Connecticut National Golf Club … Logan Gagnon and Cameron Seiffert each shot 38 for Killingly, which outscored the Lancers, 143-211 … Constantino Kapilotis shot a 42 but NFA (1-1, 1-1 ECC) was edged by East Lyme (4-3) … Max Weston and Nick Wigfield each shot a 48, while Liam O’Neill shot a 49 for the Wildcats, who were outscored 178-187 …  Jarrett Towne earned medalist honors with a round of 37 as Ellis Tech defeated Wolcott Tech, 173-197.

Girls tennis

Norwich Tech swept the doubles matches behind the tandems of Zerrin Ratzer and Emily Pomerleau, Sophia Caballero and Alejandra Cardona, and Alexa Lopez and Matilda MacGregor to edge Grasso Tech, 4-3 …  Ildanita Campos earned a win at No. 3 singles for the Warriors (1-1) …  Talia Santese and Kaitlyn Tingle earned straight set singles wins, while Malia Taylor-Robichaud and Norah Dimartino earned a straight set victory at No. 1 doubles but Killingly fell short against Windham, 4-3.
