Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) wanted to break the ice at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, so he warmed up the Florida crowd with a questionable joke about his weather preferences. "I gotta say, Orlando is awesome," Cruz said. "It's not as nice as Cancun. But it's nice." Cruz was alluding to the trip he took to Cancun last week in the midst of a massive snowstorm plaguing Texas. Cruz's trip lasted just 11 hours, but the storm — which resulted in a yet-unknown number of deaths and widespread power outages — is still impacting Texans, making his CPAC icebreaker all the more unfunny. As of Wednesday, more than a million Texans still lacked drinkable water in their homes, with 1.2 million people facing "water disruptions," The Texas Tribune reports. Yulissa Gonzalez, a mother of three in North Texas, detailed to The Dallas Morning News how burst pipes have caused her apartment to flood and reek of mildew. Gonzalez is one of hundreds of people in the area still awaiting post-storm repairs, writes The Dallas Morning News. One plumbing company in Austin, Texas, has over 2,500 unfulfilled customer requests, reports the Tribune, and supply chain shortages have only made the increased number of requests more daunting. Cruz, for his part, did help pass out at least one case of water last week. A former SNP minister has called for secret documents about the Alex Salmond affair to be made public and said Nicola Sturgeon should resign if they prove allegations of a conspiracy. Alex Neil, an MSP who held senior cabinet posts in Edinburgh under both Mr Salmond and Ms Sturgeon, called for transparency from both the Scottish Government and the Crown Office, which have both been criticised for withholding evidence. Mr Salmond has alleged that senior figures in the SNP, including Ms Sturgeon’s husband and her chief of staff, conspired against him by using sexual assault allegations to attempt to ruin his political career and potentially imprison him. Ms Sturgeon has said claims of a conspiracy involving not only the SNP but the prosecution service and other public bodies are ridiculous.

President Joe Biden has spoken with King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud of Saudi Arabia ahead of the release of a report from US intelligence officials that is expected to reveal that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved and likely ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. A White House report of their phone call on Thursday did not disclose whether they discussed the findings in the report. The leaders “discussed regional security, including the renewed diplomatic efforts led by the United Nations and the United States to end the war in Yemen, and the US commitment to help Saudi Arabia defend its territory as it faces attacks from Iranian-aligned groups,” according to a readout of their call.
A declassified U.S. intelligence report is set to be released on Thursday finding that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved and likely ordered the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. That's according to four U.S. officials familiar with the report. The report's release is part of U.S. President Joe Biden's policy to reassess ties with Saudi Arabia over its human rights record and intervention in Yemen's civil war.It follows four years of more comfortable relations under former President Donald Trump.Biden told reporters on Wednesday he had read the report and plans to speak soon with Saudi Arabian King Salman, the father of the country's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Biden would bypass the crown prince and only communicate with the king.Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist who had criticized Riyadh's policies, was killed by a team of operatives linked to the prince in 2018.Riyadh eventually admitted that Khashoggi was killed in a “rogue” extradition operation gone wrong, but denied the crown prince's involvement.A classified report on his murder was shared with U.S. lawmakers in late 2018.But the Trump administration rejected demands to release a declassified version to preserve the U.S.-Saudi alliance and promote U.S. arms sales to the kingdom.Biden has pledged to take a more hardline approach with Saudi Arabia in part because of Khashoggi's murder.Since taking office, he's ended arms sales to stop supporting Riyadh's intervention in Yemen and appointed a special envoy to Yemen in an effort to end its grueling civil war.
