Spring Valley woman sentenced to prison for stabbing conviction

Gavel

NEW CITY - A Spring Valley woman was sentenced Wednesday to nine years in state prison after being convicted earlier this year of stabbing a village businesswoman.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh announced that Evelyn Lopez, 38, was sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of first-degree assault, a felony.

She also will serve 364 days in prison apiece for two convictions of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor. Walsh said all the sentences will run concurrently.

Lopez was convicted Feb. 8, following a three-week jury trial before Rockland County Court Judge Larry J. Schwartz.

Walsh said Lopez approached the businesswoman as she was getting into her vehicle moments after she closed her restaurant on March 10, 2022, feigning the need for medical assistance. When the woman attempted to help Lopez, Walsh said, Lopez stabbed her multiple times, slashing her on the face and hand.

The stabbing cut tendons in the businesswoman's hand that required specialized surgery, and caused a deep gash on her face.

Members of the Spring Valley and town of Ramapo police departments and the Rockland County Sheriff's office all responded to the scene, where they recovered the two knives possessed by Lopez during the attack.

"This unprovoked attack left the victim with serious injuries," Walsh said in a statement released by his office. "The defendant will now be serving a lengthy prison sentence and will be held accountable for her actions."

Jeffrey Schonbrun, Lopez's attorney, declined to make a comment on her behalf.
