Spring Valley's Jared Lloyd to join National Fallen Firefighter Memorial

Jared Lloyd's heroic actions and death are going national.

The Spring Valley Fire Department lieutenant's name will be enshrined this weekend on the memorial for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The foundation will honor Lloyd and 147 other firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2021 and in previous years. Each firefighter's name will be inscribed on a bronze plaque and become a permanent part of the National Memorial, located 90 minutes outside Washington, D.C. in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Lloyd, 35, the father of two young sons, died on March 23, 2021, as he and other firefighters rescued 112 residents at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults in Spring Valley. The inferno caused parts of the Lafayette Street building to collapse on top of Lloyd as he searched for remaining residents. Adult home resident Oliver Hueston, 72, died in the fire as other firefighters and residents suffered injuries.

Sabrail Davenport, the mother of Jared Lloyd, the Spring Valley firefighter who died in the line of duty in 2021, and LloydÕs son Darius, 5, follow an honor guard after Lloyd was honored posthumously as the firefighter of the year during the Firefighters Association of New YorkÕs 150th annual convention at the Tarrytown House Estate Aug. 10 2022. Lloyd died March 23, 2021 as he tried to rescue residents in a massive fire at Evergreen Court Home For Adults in Spring Valley.

Honors, questions remain

A section of Route 45 is named for Lloyd in Hillcrest.

On the one-year anniversary of his death, hundreds of people — firefighters, other first responders, family, and friends — attended a candlelight vigil for Lloyd on March 23 at Spring Valley High School. Lloyd, a nearly two-decade-long firefighter who worked as a field service technician for Optimum. graduated from the Route 59 school.

While Lloyd’s memory has endured, so have the questions regarding what led to the Spring Valley conflagration, which drew a response from more than 25 fire departments and emergency response units. Investigators have been tight-lipped regarding the status of inspections at the century-old building, which firefighters said featured narrow hallways and stairwells.

The investigation has led to criminal prosecutions against two then-village building inspectors and two rabbis accused of causing the fatal fire while cleansing the facility's kitchen and ovens for the Passover holiday.

Charges against two others who worked at Evergreen were resolved without convictions late last year. Both testified before the grand jury that brought the multiple indictments.

Lloyd’s death has been credited for pushing the state to task Rockland County with taking over Spring Valley’s building department, overseeing inspections, enforcement and prosecutions of property owners who violate state fire and building codes.
