The Springfield City School District (SCSD) will extend their Thanksgiving Break from three days to five in observance of the district’s ‘Wellness Week,’ according to a Springfield City School District spokesperson.

The district will be closed through the entire week of Thanksgiving beginning Nov. 21 through Nov. 25., the spokesperson said in a media release shared with News Center 7 Thursday. Classes and department operations will resume on Nov. 28.

‘Wellness Week’ began in 2021 in response to the stress and mental health problems students and staff began to face during the COVID-19 pandemic, the spokesperson said. It applies to all students and staff in the district.

“The District has made several changes to our classrooms, our buildings and our departments in recent years that renew a focus on social emotional learning for our students and the mental health of our staff,” SCSD Superintendent Dr. Bob Hill said in the media release. “Without addressing these important pieces of the puzzle, we will never get far as a District- or as people. It is my hope that students and staff will return to school rested, recharged and reinvigorated to achieve their goals and finish the semester strong.”

The SCSD Board of Education may consider making ‘Wellness Week’ permanent to acknowledge the importance of student and staff mental health, the spokesperson said in the release.
