UPDATE: Coroner ID’s Springfield man killed in Saturday shooting

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Sangamon County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of a Springfield man who was killed in a shooting over the weekend.

Coroner Jim Allmon said Michael Newton, 33, was identified as the victim. An autopsy performed on Monday showed he died from a single gunshot wound to the neck.

The shooting and death remain under investigation by Allmon’s office and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A 33-year-old Springfield man is dead following a shooting at a local mobile home park on Saturday.

At 2:50 p.m., the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene near North Edmond and East Elm Streets in Springfield. Authorities said the victim suffered at least one gunshot wound and was taken to St. John’s Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 3:21 p.m.

Responding detectives learned that the shooting may be related to an earlier disturbance on North Wesley Street, and gathered a suspect vehicle description and travel direction from witnesses.

Just after 6 p.m., Springfield Police found the suspect vehicle parked at a home near Fox Bridge Road and Melrose Street. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office contacted the homeowner and searched the premises, but the suspect was not found. The suspect vehicle was then processed for evidence.

Meanwhile, a witness was interviewed by detectives at the Sheriff’s Office then released.

Officials said detectives have identified a person of interest, and that more updates will come as they continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
