A Springfield man pleaded guilty to murder earlier this month for killing his wife in 2018.

Bob Houston, 40 of Springfield, turned himself in to the police shortly after his wife of just one month was found dead in their home with an apparent gunshot wound four years ago.

In August of 2018, officers were sent to a residence in the 2600 block of South Fremont Avenue to do a welfare check. When they arrived on the scene, they found Houston's wife, Slyolandra Patterson, 32 of Springfield, dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

She had four children, two boys and two girls.

The next day Houston surrendered to police.

The Springfield Police Department said investigators “determined that the incident was not a random act and was an incident of domestic assault.”

At the time, family members told authorities that while they knew Houston and Patterson were having problems, they never expected that Patterson was in mortal danger.

On May 5, Houston pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. As part of an agreement with prosecutors in exchange for his guilty plea, Houston was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder.

Houston's attorney could not be reached for comment by press time.
