A Springfield man was sentenced to three years in federal prison Monday on charges that he sold an AR-15 rifle stolen from a house in January.

Dalton Smith, 29, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois by Senior Judge Sue Myerscough on one count of selling a stolen weapon and one count of being a felon in possession of a weapon for his role in the sale of a stolen Colt AR-15 style rifle in January. In addition to the prison sentence, Smith received three years of supervised release.

The rifle had been one of a series of weapons and parts that had been taken from a home in Springfield earlier in the month. Court documents indicate that the sale took place around Jan. 20 of this year, with Myerscough noting during the hearing that Smith sold the gun for $450 while knowing it was stolen. The gun had a high-capacity magazine that was capable of holding 30 rounds of ammunition.

With assistance from the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Smith was arrested on March 16 and reached a plea deal on April 25.

Smith could have faced upwards of 15 years in prison for possession of the firearm and 10 years for the sale, with up to $500,000 in fines.
