Springfield Public Schools named developer of the year by contractors association

Two years after city voters approved a historic bond issue, Springfield Public Schools has been recognized for how it used the money to improve and expand district facilities.

The Developer of the Year award was announced Friday by the Springfield Contractors Association.

"These improvements have a critical impact to our students and teachers, creating fantastic learning environments and resources to give our students the best chance to succeed," SCA board member Ty Alexander said in a video announcing the award.

"These investments are critical not only for our teachers and students but are also vital for our continued efforts to retain and attract talent and business to the Springfield area."

The 37th annual Salute to Design and Construction Awards Banquet was held Friday at the Oasis Convention Center.

Springfield school projects funded by the $168 million bond issue, called Proposition S, were suggested by the Citizens Task Force on Facilities.

With the funds, the district addressed safety, accessibility and quality. The projects have also included secure entrances.

The following projects have been completed:

  • Construction of a new Adah Fulbright Early Childhood Center

  • Construction of a new Boyd Elementary

  • Construction of a new Delaware Elementary

  • Expansion and renovation at Sunshine Elementary

  • Construction of a new Williams Elementary and addition of the O'Reilly Unit of Boys & Girls Club

These bond-funded projects are still in progress:

  • Renovation and partial rebuilding of Hillcrest High

  • Construction of a new Jarrett Middle

  • Construction of a new York Elementary

  • Addition of storm shelters at Twain and Field schools

At the event, a total of 27 scholarships were given, five Missouri State University teams were recognized for placing in the ASC Region IV Management Competition, the annual photo contest winners were recognized, and eight professional awards were given.

The Salute Lifetime Achievement Awards are given for a lifetime commitment to the design and construction industry.

The award winners were Chris Nattinger and Norris Cornell.

The Springfield Contractors Association presented the Design Team of the Year award to the following for their contribution to the Innovative Dental proje:

  • Architecture & Interior Design – Buxton Kubik Dodd Design Collective

  • Civil Engineer – Anderson Engineering

  • Structural Engineer – Miller Engineering

  • MEP Engineer – Jennifer Winslow, PE / Buxton Kubik Dodd Design Collective

  • Construction Manager – Snyder Construction Group

  • Owner – Innovative Dental

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) presented the Craftsman of the Year award to Dianna Devore & Design Fabrication Team for their work on the new Miller Engineering office building.

The institute also presented the Superintendent of the Year award to Aaron Keeton with Nabholz Construction for his work on the Williams Elementary project.

The National Association of Women in Construction presented two Outstanding Women in Construction Awards.

The Rosebud Award is given to someone who has been in the industry for less than 10 years and was presented to Megan Short with the Springfield Contractors Association.

The Vesta Award is given to someone who has been in the industry for over 10 years and was presented to Melissa Turpin with Unique Tile.
