Springfield Train Derailment: A look back at previous train derailments in the Miami Valley

A large train derailment in Springfield Saturday may feel familiar to some Miami Valley residents.

On April 3, 1974 a deadly EF5 tornado ripped through Xenia, killing 22 people and derailing a train in Greene County.

Twelve years later on July 8, 1986, 15 cars of a 144-car freight train derailed in Miamisburg. The story got national attention.

Hundreds of people were evacuated after a car containing white phosphorous started burning uncontrollably, sending a huge plume of some across parts of southern Montgomery County.

In May of 2022, more than two dozen rail cars derailed near Lower Valley Pike and Old Mill Road in Clark County.

The train was carrying new cars and scrap metal.

Last June a train heading through Coldwater has pushed off the tracks after it hit a semi-trailer.

The force of the impact pushed the semi into a local business.

The driver was cited for failure to yield at a railroad crossing.
