Springs Utilities to propose rate changes

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — At a Utilities Board meeting on Wednesday, March 20, Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) will propose a rate change that could go into effect in April.

Springs Utilities said if approved, the changes will result in an overall decrease in customer bills. The proposed changes are in response to lower-than-expected costs for natural gas driven by increased U.S. supply and lower demand.

While individual bills will be impacted depending on weather, energy use and home efficiency, Springs Utilities said the average impact would equate to about a $1.50 decrease per month.

Proposed changes include:

  • Decreases to the electric cost adjustment (ECA) and natural gas cost adjustment (GCA).

  • Slight increases to the electric and natural gas capacity charges (ECC and GCC).

    • For electric, this covers the cost of delivering natural gas used for electric generation.

    • GCC covers the costs of safely and reliably transporting natural gas through pipelines to the community, as well as gas storage costs.

The proposed rates would decrease the average commercial bill by about $26 per month. The average industrial bill would decrease by about $1,488 per month. Changes would be effective April 1 if approved by City Council at its March 26 meeting.
