Spurs Up! Gamecocks land commitment from JUCO cornerback

South Carolina’s staff isn’t able to recruit in person at the moment due to the coronavirus, but the Gamecocks are still getting the job done on the recruiting trail.

USC landed a commitment Monday night from Marcellas Dial.

“It means the world to me,” Dial said. “Since I was a kid, I wanted to go play at South Carolina. And now that it’s come true, it just means the world to me. I just want to keep making my mother proud.”

Dial is currently at Georgia Military College after attending Woodruff High School in Woodruff, South Carolina. He graduated from Woodruff in 2019.

“He had a great year for us. Long, physical, did a great job for us,” GMC coach Bert Williams said. “I’m excited for him to make that decision. He’s a very intense guy, in a good way. He loves to compete. He’s just dialed in. Dialed in on coaching. Dialed in on instruction, on making himself better each and every day in practice.”

The 6-foot-1, 190 pound corner recorded 10 tackles with one interception and one fumble recovery in 2019.

Williams added that interest in Dial started picking up in January, but the Gamecocks have recruited him the longest. Dial is expected to graduate in December and enroll in January. He will have three years to play two at USC.

“They’ve known about him really since the start of the year when they were looking at some of our other guys,” Williams said. “Once they got the film and got what he’s been doing in the classroom and saw where he was, it kind of spurred up a little bit.”

Dial is South Carolina’s fourth commit for the class of 2021. He joins quarterback Colten Gauthier, cornerback Demarko Williams and receiver Sam Reynolds.

“I can play anywhere on the field, anywhere in the secondary,” Dial said. “Anywhere I play, I make plays.”
